Senior Manager, Platform Engineering - Cloud Platforms
Location

Richmond, VA or Lynchburg, VA

Hybrid work schedule required, including both remote and in-office workdays. Core collaboration hours align with standard Eastern Time business hours.
About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Manager of Platform Engineering to lead teams responsible for delivering and operating foundational cloud platform capabilities that enable secure, scalable, and efficient technology adoption across the enterprise.

This leadership role is accountable for platform strategy, engineering execution, operational excellence, and the continuous evolution of cloud services across public and private cloud environments. You will oversee core platform capabilities including networking, identity and access management, infrastructure automation, governance, observability, and shared platform services.

Working closely with Architecture, Security, Engineering, Infrastructure, and Operations teams, you will help drive a platform-first approach to cloud adoption by ensuring services are secure, reliable, scalable, and aligned with enterprise standards and business objectives.

Success in this role requires strong technical leadership, strategic thinking, operational discipline, and a passion for building high-performing engineering teams. You will play a key role in enabling self-service capabilities, accelerating cloud adoption, and advancing modern platform engineering practices across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
  • Lead, mentor, and develop teams responsible for foundational cloud platform services.
  • Define and execute platform roadmaps, priorities, and strategic initiatives in partnership with technology leadership and architecture teams.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive adoption of modern engineering practices and platform operating models.
Platform Engineering & Delivery
  • Oversee the development and operation of enterprise cloud platform capabilities, including:
    • Networking
    • Identity and access management
    • Governance and policy controls
    • Infrastructure automation
    • Monitoring and observability
    • Shared developer and platform services
  • Ensure platform solutions are designed for reliability, scalability, security, and operational excellence.
  • Enable standardized, self-service platform capabilities that improve developer productivity and accelerate cloud adoption.
Operations & Governance
  • Establish operational governance practices including incident management, service health monitoring, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
  • Define and monitor service-level objectives, key performance indicators, and platform adoption metrics.
  • Partner with risk, security, infrastructure, and operations teams to ensure adherence to enterprise standards and compliance requirements.
  • Support platform financial management through capacity planning, cost optimization, and cloud financial operations best practices.
Automation & Modernization
  • Champion automation-first engineering practices utilizing Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, GitOps methodologies, policy-as-code, and cloud-native automation capabilities.
  • Drive standardization through reusable patterns, templates, and engineering frameworks.
  • Reduce operational complexity by streamlining onboarding, provisioning, and platform management processes.
Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Collaborate across architecture, security, engineering, infrastructure, and business teams to translate enterprise technology strategies into actionable platform capabilities.
  • Communicate platform roadmaps, performance metrics, operational health, and strategic initiatives to leaders and key stakeholders.
  • Build strong partnerships that promote alignment and successful technology outcomes across the organization.
Qualifications
Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in cloud engineering, platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, or related technology disciplines.
  • 3+ years of experience leading technical teams and developing engineering talent.
  • Experience managing cloud infrastructure and platform services within a large-scale enterprise environment.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of AWS, Azure, and hybrid cloud technologies.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
  • Experience implementing cloud governance, security controls, landing zones, and operational guardrails.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Experience driving operational excellence through monitoring, reliability engineering, incident management, and continuous improvement practices.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with GitOps, CI/CD, cloud automation, and modern platform engineering practices.
  • Understanding of cloud security, compliance, and enterprise governance frameworks.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Proven ability to influence and collaborate across technical and executive stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated success leading organizational change and driving adoption of modern technology practices.
