Summary

Project Overview

This project focuses on redesigning a secure mobile application and associated digital resources aimed at helping New Yorkers prevent scam phone calls and text messages. The initiative will also provide education for vulnerable populations and offer accessible support resources for those impacted by scams.

The effort will support multiple programs, including Cybersecurity, 311 services, and Digital Equity, to create a unified and effective user experience that addresses a major gap in public-facing protections.

Scope of Work

The UX Designer will lead the end-to-end design process for a mobile app rebuild and supporting web resources. This includes user research, journey mapping, interface design, and content strategy, with a strong focus on accessibility, clarity, and trust.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews and user research, particularly with elderly residents, immigrant communities, and other vulnerable populations
  • Develop user personas and map end-to-end user journeys from scam interaction through reporting and resource access
  • Translate user needs into functional design requirements for application features and website navigation
  • Create high-fidelity wireframes and UI designs for mobile and web platforms
  • Develop clear, plain-language, trauma-informed content in collaboration with support teams
  • Build interactive prototypes using tools such as Figma for stakeholder review and developer handoff
  • Facilitate usability testing sessions and iterate designs based on feedback
  • Ensure visual consistency across all assets in alignment with established design systems

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in UX/Product Design
  • Strong expertise in user research methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative approaches (e.g., usability testing, moderated interviews)
  • Proficiency with design and prototyping tools such as Figma and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams with engineers and product managers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing for multilingual users (Spanish, Chinese, Russian) and vulnerable populations
  • Background in mobile app (iOS/Android) and responsive web design
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices, especially for senior users (e.g., high contrast, readable typography, screen reader support)
  • Experience working within or contributing to enterprise or municipal design systems
