The Role

As the Senior Engineering Manager, you will lead and support SimplePractice engineers in designing and developing high quality software solutions for our products. You'll set technical direction, grow the engineers on your team, and partner closely with product, design, and other stakeholders to turn requirements into software our customers rely on every day. This is a builder's role: expect to be in a design review, a customer conversation, and your team's code in the same week. Your role will focus on both building things well and also building the right things.
Responsibilities
  • Lead a squad of engineers, fostering collaboration and supporting their professional growth.
  • Set the technical direction for your squad and translate it into a clear, sequenced plan the team can execute.
  • Own architectural decisions across the full stack, from data model and APIs to the front-end.
  • Partner with product and design to shape the roadmap, not just deliver against it. Help the team decide what to build, then hold a high bar on how.
  • Provide mentorship to engineers across a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Set clear performance expectations and provide direct, timely and actionable feedback.
  • Promote engineering best practices within your squad and across the entire engineering team.
  • See around the corner to anticipate technical and resourcing challenges.
  • Ensuring collaboration in a remote / hybrid work environment across cross-functional teams.
Desired Skills & Experience

Experience
  • 5+ years delivering high-quality software products as a software engineer.
  • 5+ years managing software engineers, with clear ownership of your team's hiring, performance, and technical direction.
  • Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

Technical depth
  • Strong technical background building web applications with common frameworks. Ruby on Rails preferred, not required.
  • A high bar for clean, readable, testable code, and the instinct to hold the team to it.
  • Experience architecting web applications, with a solid grasp of SQL and databases.
  • Proficiency with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and release management. Working knowledge of front-end technologies and frameworks.
  • Experience with identity management, authentication methods, and security standards.
  • Experience delivering ML/AI projects (preferred).

Leadership and communication
  • Are technical and hands-on: comfortable in design reviews and in the team's code.
  • Have strong product instincts and a record of helping teams decide what to build, not just how.
  • Communicate clearly across functions and keep product, Customer Success, Sales, GTM, and executive partners aligned through ambiguity.
  • A proven track record managing, mentoring, scaling, and inspiring diverse engineering teams in complex, zero-to-one environments.
  • Strong verbal communication and technical writing skills.
  • The ability to translate business objectives into technical solutions and plans.
  • A working command of software development lifecycles, agile principles, and modern engineering practices.
  • An innate curiosity about new technologies and engineering patterns.
Bonus Points

Along with your application, share a link to something you built using AI: a working prototype, a tool, an app, a workflow, anything real. Include a sentence or two on what you made, which AI tools you used, and what you'd do differently next time. We care less about polish than about how you think and how you build.
Benefits

We offer a competitive benefits program including:
  • Medical, dental, vision, life & disability insurance
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Flexible Time Off (FTO), wellbeing days, paid holidays, and summer Fridays
  • Mental health resources
  • Paid parental leave & Backup Care
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)
