Systems Engineer (SME)

Role Summary

The Senior Systems Engineer / Solution Architect serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting mission-critical software architecture and solutions engineering initiatives within a federal government environment. This role collaborates across technical and operational teams to analyze requirements, develop detailed technical solutions, and support system security and compliance with applicable federal standards. The position contributes to large-scale modernization efforts involving enterprise physical access control systems and other mission-critical technologies.

Responsibilities

• Lead comprehensive needs analyses and support the development of Initial Technical Solution Reports (ITSRs) based on operational and functional requirements.
• Conduct Solution Assessments (SAs) and support engineering rigor throughout the system lifecycle, including Systems Engineering Technical Reviews (SETRs).
• Develop and document software solution designs, interface requirements, and data exchange standards for integrated hardware and enterprise platforms.
• Guide requirements development, technical reviews, and verification and testing activities across software delivery teams.
• Support adherence to applicable federal and DoD security standards and frameworks, including FICAM, FIPS 201, NIST SP 800-series, PKI, and OSDP protocols.
• Create and review enterprise solution models using frameworks and methodologies such as Unified Architecture Framework (UAF), DoDAF, and Systems Modeling Language (SysML) within Cameo Systems Modeler.
• Evaluate emerging software technologies and recommend system enhancements and optimization opportunities based on technical and operational requirements.
• Develop and communicate system integration roadmaps that address customer, technical, and operational requirements.
• Collaborate across technical and operational teams to promote architecture alignment and consistency across mission solutions.
• Support modernization of physical access control systems and other mission-critical infrastructure by applying established systems engineering and architecture practices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification, such as Security+ CE, CySA+, or CCNA Security, as applicable to the position.
• Demonstrated experience developing software solution designs, defining interface requirements, and working with technologies such as REST/SOAP APIs, JSON/XML, TLS, and enterprise ICAM protocols.
• Experience with Unified Architecture Framework (UAF), DoDAF models, and Systems Modeling Language (SysML) using Cameo Systems Modeler or similar modeling tools.
• Strong knowledge of applicable federal and DoD identity, access management, and security standards, including FICAM, FIPS 201, NIST SP 800-series, PKI, and OSDP protocols.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including experience developing technical reports and delivering technical briefings to stakeholders.
• Ability to obtain and maintain the required Public Trust determination.
• Experience with Physical Access Control Systems (PACS), enterprise identity and access management, or related federal government environments is preferred.
• Familiarity with Agile and DevSecOps methodologies and modern software delivery pipelines is preferred.
• Relevant professional certifications in enterprise architecture, systems engineering, or related disciplines are preferred.

Publishing Pay Range: USD $130,000.00 - USD $170,000.00 Annually

This is a fully remote role and can be performed from any approved location within the United States.
