This position supports the development of detailed network growth and evolution plans for the National Core Transport Network, including backbone and metropolitan transport systems. The engineer produces comprehensive planning packages for execution by field and design engineering teams, ensuring the proper procurement and installation of transport equipment.

Key ResponsibilitiesNetwork Planning & Engineering- Participate in developing detailed plans for network growth, evolution, and capacity management across the National Core Transport Network.
- Support planning activities involving backbone network elements and metropolitan networks in major cities.
- Prepare formal planning packages for field/design engineering teams to guide implementation, procurement, and equipment installation.
- Apply telecommunications engineering principles, including SONET, WDM, central office systems, outside plant engineering, and network transport technologies.
- Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations governing telecommunications equipment placement.
Data & Capacity Analysis- Utilize network transport planning processes and data analysis methods to evaluate system capacity requirements and future network needs.
Tools & Systems- Work with mechanized transport planning systems such as:
- Trunk Inventory Record Keeping System (TIRKS)
- CNDC ASPEN Portal
- LCAM
- Metasolv
- Fireworks
- CORE or similar engineering systems
Budget & Project Management- Manage capital and expense budgets for assigned projects and maintain monthly cost estimates for each funding package.
- Handle short-term projects (typically 1-6 months), demonstrating effective project management and leadership where required.
Collaboration, Mentoring & Professionalism- Provide mentoring, training, and technical guidance to peers and less-experienced staff.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, professional communication, and a high level of work ethic.
- Exhibit patience, negotiation skills, and the ability to assist individuals with varying levels of experience.
Required Qualifications- 2-4 years of relevant engineering or network transport planning experience.
- Foundational knowledge in:
- Network transport engineering
- SONET and wave division multiplexing
- Central office infrastructure and common systems
- Outside plant principles
- Capacity management and data analysis
- Competent computer skills.
