Role : Senior Data Analyst (ETL / Mainframe-to-SQL Conversion)

About the Role : Client is modernizing its core pension systems through an enterprise-wide Legacy Replacement program, and its Data Management team needs a Senior Data Analyst who knows both sides of the migration: mainframe VSAM and COBOL on one end, SQL Server and DataStage on the other. You'll own detailed field-level analysis, profiling, and mapping of legacy data into relational and dimensional SQL structures, then prove it's right through rigorous conversion and validation work.
What You'll Do
- Analyze, profile, and map VSAM files at the field and metadata level into relational/dimensional SQL tables.
- Extract business rules, field references, and calculated data from legacy COBOL code to build Source-to-Target Mappings (STTMs).
- Convert business and data quality rules into ETL and SQL technical specifications.
- Develop complex SQL data validations based on STTMs and target data models.
- Help identify, inventory, and classify Client's critical data.
- Work with data SMEs to document data quality rules, definitions, and valid values in data dictionary documentation.
- Optimize and performance-tune existing ETL and SQL processes.
- Partner with SMEs, technical leads, and IT teams to identify data quality gaps and remediate them using manual and automated solutions.
- Support processes that proactively detect, correct, and prevent invalid data.
- Handle defects and drive problem resolution across mainframe and distributed environments.
Required Experience
- 8+ years of source-to-target data mapping in mixed mainframe and relational database environments.
- 8+ years of recent hands-on development with IBM DataStage ETL.
- 8+ years of recent experience with pension administration systems.
- Hands-on experience converting or migrating VSAM data to relational/dimensional SQL distributed databases.
- Experience extracting field references and calculated data from COBOL programs.
- Experience creating data dictionary documentation, including business terms, valid values, and definitions.
- Experience with BMC Control-M workload automation.
- Experience with Git version control.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong SQL skills, including complex queries and stored procedures.
- Proficiency in SSRS report development.
- Proficiency with mainframe technologies: COBOL, CICS, and DB2.
- Comfort working across IBM Mainframe, Windows Server, and SQL Server environments.
- Solid understanding of data structures and their relationship to ETL applications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to gather requirements and propose solutions aligned to team methodology.
Nice to Have
- Experience with data quality or data profiling tools.
- Experience with data warehouses and data marts.
- Prior work on a New York State or New York City pension system.
