Role Overview

Senior Cloud Automation Engineer - Public Cloud (Johnson & Johnson)

The Sr. Cloud Automation Engineer role is part of Johnson & Johnson's public cloud organization and is responsible for driving an automation-first strategy to improve operational efficiency, reduce incidents and service requests, and accelerate delivery across public cloud (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and remote site environments. This role will lead teams that extend and evolve an existing API/microservices platform by designing and delivering RESTful APIs, microservices, and agentic AI-driven automation to handle provisioning, patching, decommissioning, ticket and service request resolution across servers, databases, and Kubernetes. As a trusted leader in the Cloud & Automation team, this role will work with strategic external partners and global business and technology leaders to translate requirements into scalable, secure, compliant, and auditable automation solutions implemented with Infrastructure-as-Code, Python-based APIs, and modern CI/CD and observability practices.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead a cross-functional automation team to build and operate API-first platforms, microservices, and agentic AI workflows.
  • Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and vendor teams to define automation for provisioning, patching, scaling, remediation, and decommissioning across public cloud and remote sites.
  • Enhance the API/microservices platform and deliver RESTful Python APIs and service contracts (BDD as appropriate) to expose automation.
  • Design and deploy agentic AI and autonomous workflows to automate ticket resolution, service requests, and remediation with human-in-the-loop controls.
  • Implement centralized logging, monitoring, tracing, and analytics for automation and managed infrastructure (servers, databases, PaaS DBs, Kubernetes) to reduce MTTR and service requests.
  • Implement Infrastructure-as-Code and configuration management (Terraform, IaC templates) integrated with API-driven automation and CI/CD.
  • Integrate automation with platform components, orchestration engines, and service catalogs for consistent lifecycle management.
  • Define and enforce security, compliance, and cost guardrails; ensure auditability, approvals, and secure credential handling for automated actions.
  • Own the engineering backlog and roadmap to mature provisioning, patching, change management, decommissioning, and self-service capabilities.
  • Identify automation opportunities, build reusable frameworks iteratively, and drive adoption across infrastructure and application teams.
  • Recruit, upskill, and mentor engineers on API design, microservices, testing, observability, and agent safety.
  • Groom Jira stories, set acceptance criteria and metrics, and measure automation impact (incident reduction, ticket deflection, hours saved, cost savings).

Qualifications

Required
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree.
  • 8+ years in software/platform/automation engineering with technical leadership.
  • 2+ years hands-on development experience in RESTful API and microservices development.
  • Strong Python skills and BDD-style testing experience.
  • 2+ years hands-on development experience in IaC and configuration management.
  • Practical experience across public and private clouds.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD, observability (logging/metrics/tracing), and SRE practices.
  • Production experience deploying agentic AI and automation orchestration.
  • Knowledge of security, compliance, credential management, and auditability for automation.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and mentoring skills.

Preferred
  • Familiarity with service meshes, API gateways, or service catalogs.
  • Background in MLOps, LLM integration, or AI agents in production.
  • Experience scaling enterprise REST APIs and microservices platforms.
  • Cloud or automation tool certifications (AWS/Azure/Google Cloud Platform/Terraform).
  • Experience with Jira and Agile delivery practices.
