Network Engineer, Operations
About the Role
We are seeking a Network Engineer, Operations to join a dynamic Network Operations team responsible for maintaining and supporting critical network infrastructure. This role requires strong troubleshooting skills, operational discipline, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, 24/7 environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot live production network infrastructure
- Configure, administer, and support Cisco and Juniper routers and switches
- Perform firmware updates, hardware maintenance, and software upgrades
- Diagnose and resolve network performance issues across Layer 3 environments
- Troubleshoot circuit issues, including both commercially lit services and dark fiber
- Support network security configurations including ACLs, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems
- Prepare and communicate maintenance notifications and outage announcements
- Document activity and updates through ticketing systems, ensuring clear and accurate communication
- Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors (hardware providers, telecom partners) via phone, email, and messaging platforms
- Participate in shift rotations, including evenings, weekends, and overnight coverage

Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in:
- Network operations supporting production environments, OR
- Technical support role working with customers via phone and ticketing systems
- Hands-on experience with Cisco and/or Juniper networking equipment
- Experience with Layer 3 routing protocols
- Proven ability to troubleshoot real-time network and routing issues
- Experience installing, upgrading, and securing network infrastructure
- Knowledge of:
- Network security principles
- ACL configuration
- Firewalls and intrusion detection systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Industry certifications such as Cisco CCNP or JNCIA-SP
- Experience with:
- BGP and advanced routing protocols
- MPLS-SR and L2VPN technologies
- DWDM / optical transmission systems
- Background in network design, configuration, and operations
- Experience working in higher education, research, or large-scale distributed environments
Work Environment
- 24/7 operations environment requiring flexibility in scheduling
- Rotating shifts, including weekends and overnight support
- Collaborative team-oriented culture focused on operational excellence
