Senior Data Scientist (Contract)

We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to support a proof-of-concept initiative leveraging natural language processing (NLP) and advanced machine learning techniques to improve complex intake and decision-making processes. This role will focus on designing, developing, and evaluating statistical and machine learning models, while guiding the overall technical direction of the prototype.

The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in data science, experience building scalable data solutions, and a strong ability to translate complex human-driven processes into data-driven systems.

Key Responsibilities

Development Framework

• Establish a structured framework for executing technical tasks, including milestones, deliverables, and timelines
• Identify critical dependencies such as data availability, testing phases, and delivery schedules
• Assess risks and define mitigation strategies Current Process Evaluation
• Participate in discussions to understand existing workflows and decision-making processes
• Identify gaps and inefficiencies, and prioritize improvements based on impact Solution Design & Development
• Lead the design of a new approach utilizing NLP and machine learning techniques
• Define system components and evaluate their effectiveness in addressing identified challenges
• Assess architectural and computational trade-offs, including scalability, performance, and risk
• Evaluate multiple data sources (existing, simulated, or alternative datasets)
• Document methodologies and decisions for transparency Design Review
• Develop and lead design review processes
• Evaluate functional design, technical feasibility, data security, and risk factors
• Assess data sources and testing strategies
• Ensure proper documentation of findings and decisions Proof-of-Concept Implementation
• Oversee prototype development through regular status updates and milestone reviews
• Provide technical leadership to resolve challenges and mitigate risks Demonstration & Stakeholder Engagement
• Support and present solution demonstrations to stakeholders
• Capture feedback and incorporate insights into ongoing development Roadmap Development
• Contribute to a roadmap for scaling and integrating the solution into broader systems Agile Delivery
• Participate in and support Agile development practices to ensure successful project execution

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or a related field
• Strong experience in data science, machine learning, and statistical modeling
• Proven ability to design and build machine learning models from the ground up
• Experience evaluating algorithmic trade-offs (accuracy, performance, scalability, etc.)
• Expertise in data engineering and processing large-scale datasets
• Experience developing data-driven decision-making systems for complex, non-deterministic environments
• Ability to translate real-world processes into computational models

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with large, complex datasets in high-performance environments
• Background in NLP and unstructured data processing
• Familiarity with Agile development methodologies
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with technical and non-technical stakeholders
