Mainframe Infrastructure (Z/OS System Programming) Consultant

Role Overview

TEKsystems is seeking a Mainframe Infrastructure (Z/OS System Programming) Consultant to support one of our public sector clients. This role will serve as a subject matter expert providing oversight and operational support for large mainframe environments. We are looking for a consultant who has experience in mainframe migration, data center transformation, disaster recovery, and ongoing operational support for mainframe services. This position requires deep experience in mainframe infrastructure, data center service models, and hardware and software migration programs.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide advanced operational and technical support for enterprise mainframe platforms, including associated system software and utilities.
• Ensure uninterrupted day-to-day mainframe operations while meeting defined service performance and availability targets.
• Design, plan, and support the deployment of new mainframe hardware environments.
• Lead and contribute to migration initiatives involving mainframe software, infrastructure components, and related networking integrations.
• Support lifecycle activities including refresh, transition, and retirement of large-scale, complex mainframe services and platforms.
• Participate in disaster recovery related mainframe initiatives, including hardware deployment and operational readiness activities.
• Contribute to broader data center modernization and transformation programs, including performance and software optimization initiatives.
• Execute standard operational changes and support incident, problem, and root cause analysis processes.
• Create, maintain, and execute detailed operational and change procedures to support infrastructure modifications.
• Gather diagnostic data and system artifacts, analyze technical issues, and clearly document findings and corrective actions.
• Participate in scheduled on-call or standby rotations as required to support critical systems.
• Ensure issues and service requests are resolved efficiently, with clear and consistent communication to stakeholders and leadership.

Required Qualifications

Core Technical Experience

• Minimum of 10 years' experience supporting and overseeing enterprise-class mainframe infrastructure in complex environments.
• Proven experience leading or contributing to major platform refreshes, transitions, and infrastructure change initiatives.
• Demonstrated success supporting the replacement or modernization of large-scale, mission-critical hardware and services.
• Strong understanding of modern data center service delivery models, combined with hands-on experience in contemporary infrastructure operations.
• Experience working within high-availability, enterprise mainframe environments.

Recent Experience

• Practical, hands-on experience supporting mainframe infrastructure within the last three (3) years.

Mainframe & Project Expertise

• Extensive experience providing operational support for mainframe software within large, complex enterprise environments.
• Over 10 years of involvement in data center transformation initiatives, including major hardware and software migrations.
• Demonstrated ability to manage operational responsibilities while contributing effectively to project-based initiatives.
• Hands-on experience working with SMP/E for mainframe software installation, maintenance, upgrades, and change control.
• Demonstrated experience supporting and managing LPAR (Logical Partition) environments, including system configuration, resource allocation, and operational support in multi-partition enterprise settings.
• Ability to support software and infrastructure changes across multiple logical environments while maintaining system stability and availability.

Documentation & Communication Skills

• Strong background in producing clear, detailed documentation to support infrastructure transitions, refreshes, and migrations.
• Working knowledge of structured change management practices.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to a variety of audiences.

Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Toronto, ON.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $110.00 - $120.00/hr.
Workplace Type
This is a hybrid position in Toronto,ON.
