Job Summary

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Technical Writer with proven experience creating clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation for complex technical products. This role is critical in ensuring technical information is effectively communicated to both technical and non-technical audiences, including internal teams and external stakeholders.

The Technical Writer will support a cloud-based software development project, currently in its initial phase, and will work closely with Agile delivery teams to produce high-quality documentation such as user guides, API documentation, and release notes.

Key Responsibilities

• Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and accessible documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Manage multiple documentation projects and consistently meet established deadlines.

• Collaborate with developers, product managers, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to produce documentation supporting an Agile development team, including but not limited to:

  • User guides

  • API documentation

  • Release notes

• Maintain strong version control and documentation review practices.

• Ensure documentation complies with agency standards, accessibility requirements, and formatting guidelines.

Required Qualifications (5+ Years Each)

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communication, Computer Science, or a related field.

• Minimum 5+ years of technical writing experience (government or technology environment preferred).

• Expert-level experience with documentation tools such as:

  • MS Word

  • Google Docs

  • Confluence (or similar)

• Proficiency with tools for visuals such as:

  • Adobe Acrobat

  • SnagIT (or similar)

• Experience with Git or other version control systems (contributor or read-only level).

• Experience with documentation platforms such as GitBook or similar.

• Strong understanding of Scrum/Agile methodology.

• Familiarity with REST APIs, JSON, and software architecture concepts.

• Ability to read and interpret code snippets.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.

• Experience creating, editing, and maintaining documentation including:

  • Manuals

  • User guides

  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

• Ability to interview SMEs and distill complex information into clear documentation.

Highly Desired Skills (5+ Years Preferred)

• Experience with government documentation standards and accessibility compliance.

• Familiarity with diagramming tools such as Lucidchart, Draw.io, etc.

• Basic knowledge of programming languages or IT systems.

• Experience with UX writing.

• Knowledge of Markdown and HTML/CSS.

• Experience writing documentation for software products (SaaS, desktop, or mobile).

Additional Notes

• This is a hybrid position based in Richmond, VA.

• No travel is required.
