Purpose of Position/Summary:
The Business Operations Analyst position, within the Office of Data and Analytics (ODA), validates, cleans, and analyzes the Indiana BRFSS dataset in order to garner public health insight. Working independently, with some guidance from senior staff, the incumbent conducts general data analysis, contributes to complex data analysis, completes data quality checks, builds visualization and reports, presents key findings, and provides guidance and review for BRFSS data projects. As time allows, the incumbent also contributes to business operations projects related to improving internal communications, project coordination support for high priority efforts, and other items as assigned.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
• Serves as project lead/subject matter expert for the analysis of BRFSS data at IDOH.
• Conducts general analysis of BRFSS data; serves as project lead for analyses utilizing BRFSS data, as assigned.
• Contributes to management of the BRFSS data collection vendor as requested.
• Collaborates with internal and external partners to develop novel ways of using and reporting out surveillance data on health outcomes.
• Develops effective reports to communicate findings with target audience(s)
• Develops compelling data visualizations to communicate findings, including Tableau dashboards
• Presents key findings and summaries of results to internal and external stakeholders
• Provides project coordination support and communications support as needed for business operations projects.
• Adheres to HIPAA and other state statutes concerned with protecting data confidentiality and individual privacy
• Supports IDOH Data Transformation Office activities, as requested
Job Requirements:
• The ideal candidate would hold a master’s degree from an accredited university in biostatistics, analytics, epidemiology, programming, data science, or another related field. A bachelor’s degree in one of these fields would be considered for a candidate with a considerable amount of experience.
• 2-5 years of directly applicable experience in data analytics, preferably working with public health data.
• Demonstrated experience with data manipulation, including cleansing, standardizing, and transforming preferred.
• General knowledge of statistical software, open-source programming languages, and database querying.
• Demonstrated experience with using either SAS or R is preferred.
• Demonstrated experience with using data visualization tools is preferred.
• Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities.
• Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
• Broad knowledge of data analysis, analytics, or statistics or demonstrated ability to learn.
• Ability to work in a team environment with multiple and fluid demands.
• Ability to maintain effective and professional working relationships with internal and external customers.
