Job Summary

The Senior Solutions Engineer serves as a technical authority within the Safety and Traffic Administration (TSA). You are responsible for designing and overseeing the technical infrastructure that manages DC’s multimodal transportation network, including traffic signals, automated enforcement (speed cameras), and smart city integrations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Systems Design & Architecture

• Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS): Design and implement ITS solutions, including fiber optic communications, dynamic message signs, and incident detection systems.

• Intermodal Integration: Develop technical frameworks to integrate bike lanes, priority bus transit, and pedestrian safety tech into the existing grid.

• Data Strategy: Lead the collection and analysis of traffic data to optimize signal timing and roadway efficiency.

2. Project Leadership

• Capital Projects: Lead phases of multi-million dollar, multi-year transportation projects with District-wide impact.

• Vendor Management: Oversee specialized contractors and field personnel, ensuring hardware and software deployments meet District standards.

• Budget Oversight: Manage tracking procedures for local and federal project budgets.

3. Safety & Compliance

• Vision Zero Implementation: Design and construct safety interventions (automated traffic enforcement, "smart" intersections) to meet safety goals.

• Regulatory Alignment: Ensure all technical solutions comply with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) standards and District regulations.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Experience

• Ten (10) years of technical experience is typically preferred for "Senior" or "Authority" level roles at DDOT.

• Proven track record in multimodal operational optimization and automated safety systems.

Technical Skills

• Engineering Principles: Strong grasp of electrical systems or civil engineering.

• ITS Tech Stack: Experience with fiber optics, wireless mesh networks, and sensor technologies (LiDAR, Radar).

• Software Proficiency: Experience with traffic modeling software or GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for spatial analysis.

Soft Skills

• Collaborative Leadership: Ability to work across Wards and with external stakeholders like DC Water or federal agencies.

• Strategic Communication: Translating complex technical roadmaps into "plain English" for executive leadership and public hearings.
