Compensation: Competitive hourly rate during contract period; conversion salary range of approximately $105,000-$115,000 annually
About the Role

We are seeking a Project Engineer - Construction to join a growing Pre-Construction team supporting large-scale Building Automation and Controls projects across the United States. This role is responsible for developing comprehensive project estimates, evaluating customer requirements, coordinating subcontractor and vendor proposals, and supporting project pursuits from bid development through project handoff.

The ideal candidate has experience in construction estimating, building automation systems (BAS), controls, mechanical/electrical systems, or related engineering disciplines. This individual will collaborate with sales, engineering, operations, subcontractors, and customers to deliver accurate, competitive, and technically sound project proposals.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work remotely while supporting complex commercial construction and building automation projects. Successful performance may lead to full-time employment following the contract period.
Key Responsibilities

• Develop complete turnkey cost estimates for Building Automation and Controls projects.
• Prioritize multiple estimates and project opportunities to meet sales and business deadlines.
• Review customer plans, specifications, and project requirements to develop technically accurate and competitive proposals.
• Analyze and communicate technical, commercial, and contractual requirements associated with project opportunities.
• Solicit, evaluate, and coordinate subcontractor and vendor quotations.
• Create detailed project scopes of work, proposal narratives, and system designs.
• Lead or participate in pre-bid meetings, customer discussions, and project site walkthroughs.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, and sales teams to identify cost-saving opportunities and value-engineering solutions.
• Assist in project qualification, opportunity prioritization, and go/no-go decision processes.
• Support contract reviews, risk assessments, and legal review activities.
• Reconcile project costs and perform post-bid and post-award estimate reviews.
• Maintain and strengthen relationships with subcontractors, manufacturers, and vendors.
• Facilitate effective project turnover to operations teams following project award.
• Identify discrepancies between plans, specifications, and project requirements.
• Support reporting, pricing analysis, vendor management, and process improvement initiatives.
• Complete technical and professional development training to enhance product and systems expertise.
• Advocate for continuous improvement initiatives within the Pre-Construction organization.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent industry experience may be considered.
• 3+ years of experience in construction estimating, project engineering, pre-construction, building automation, controls, mechanical systems, electrical systems, or a related field.
• Experience reviewing construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
• Strong understanding of project costing, labor estimation, and material takeoffs.
• Experience working with subcontractors, suppliers, and vendor quotations.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and estimating/project management tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC Controls, Energy Management Systems, or Smart Building technologies.
• Knowledge of commercial construction processes and delivery methods.
• Experience supporting large-scale construction, retrofit, or controls projects.
• Familiarity with contract review, risk assessment, and value engineering practices.
• Prior experience working remotely within a geographically distributed team.

Reporting Structure

This position reports directly to the Pre-Construction Manager.
