SAP Operations and Warehousing Architect

The SAP Operations and Warehousing Architect operates as a senior authority across warehouse operations, logistics execution, and the integrated supply chain processes that move materials from the moment a purchase order is raised through to the moment a shipment leaves the dock. This role sits at the intersection of procurement, manufacturing, and fulfilment – owning the SAP architecture that keeps raw materials flowing in, finished goods moving out, and every storage location in between running without interruption.

Primary Responsibility:

Own the end-to-end architecture, design governance, and delivery of SAP Warehouse Management (WM/EWM) and Logistics Execution (LE) capabilities that underpin the physical supply chain – from inbound raw-material receipts through warehouse storage, manufacturing staging, production, finished-goods putaway, and outbound shipment – ensuring automated replenishment keeps every location continuously stocked and that all warehouse flows are tightly integrated with Procurement (MM), Production Planning (PP), and Sales & Distribution (SD).

What You’ll Do:

The SAP Operations and Warehousing Architect will lead the design and delivery of integrated warehouse and logistics solutions across the full material lifecycle. You will partner with operations, supply chain, and IT teams to ensure every movement – from goods receipt to shipment confirmation – is governed, automated, and aligned to business strategy.

• Lead the end-to-end warehouse architecture in SAP WM/EWM, covering inbound goods receipt, storage, internal material movements, manufacturing staging, finished-goods putaway, and outbound picking and packing – ensuring each step is traceable, accurate, and operationally efficient.
• Own the integration between Procurement (MM) and the warehouse – ensuring that when a purchase order triggers a goods receipt, materials are automatically directed to the right storage location with no manual intervention, and inventory is immediately visible and available for downstream processes.
• Design and govern the material flow from warehouse to manufacturing floor – configuring production supply areas and staging zones so that components are automatically pulled, staged, and available at the right work centre at the right time, with replenishment triggered by production demand rather than manual request.
• Architect the post-production goods flow – ensuring that when a production order is confirmed, finished goods are automatically received into the warehouse, routed to the correct picking storage location, and immediately available for outbound fulfilment.
• Connect the warehouse to outbound sales execution – designing the integration between SD delivery processing and WM picking so that when a shipment is created, warehouse
• tasks are automatically generated, stock is committed, picked, packed, and goods-issued back to the delivery without gaps in the process chain.
• Design and implement automated replenishment logic between storage locations – ensuring picking bins are restocked from bulk or reserve storage before they run empty, manufacturing staging areas are refilled ahead of production demand, and replenishment triggers flow automatically without planner intervention.
• Own the Logistics Execution (LE) architecture – including shipping point and route determination, outbound delivery scheduling, shipment document creation, carrier assignment, and the handoff between warehouse confirmation and billing – ensuring the LE layer operates as a seamless bridge between warehouse execution and customer fulfilment.
• Define and govern master data design across the material lifecycle – including warehouse-relevant material master views, storage type indicators, batch classification, and handling unit profiles – ensuring master data decisions made in MM and PP do not create downstream constraints in warehouse execution.
• Act as the cross-functional solution authority across WM/EWM, MM, SD, PP, and LE, resolving integration conflicts before they reach build, reviewing functional designs across streams, and preventing workarounds that erode process integrity.
• Lead solution design workshops with operations and supply chain stakeholders, translating business requirements into scalable SAP architecture, and communicating design decisions clearly to both technical teams and non-SAP audiences.
• Govern testing across all warehouse integration scenarios – from goods receipt through to shipment – ensuring integration test scripts cover the full material journey and that defects are resolved at the design level rather than patched in configuration.
• Provide post-go-live support and continuous improvement leadership, using warehouse performance data to identify bottlenecks, eliminate manual steps, and evolve the architecture as the business scales.

What Experience and Education You Need:

• 12+ years of SAP functional experience, with at least 8 years focused on Warehouse Management (LE-WM or S/4HANA EWM) and a minimum of two full end-to-end SAP implementations where warehouse operations were in scope.
• Proven ability to architect and deliver integrated solutions spanning WM/EWM, MM, SD, and PP – not just configure warehouse transactions in isolation, but design the end-to-end flow where procurement, production, and sales all converge in the warehouse.
• Deep hands-on experience across the physical goods lifecycle:

◦ Inbound: GR from purchase orders, transfer order creation for put-away, storage-type and bin determination.

◦ Storage: bin management, put-away and picking strategies, stock category management, inventory accuracy.

◦ Manufacturing staging: production supply areas, pull-list and Kanban-driven replenishment, staging area management, GI to production orders.

◦ Outbound: delivery-driven picking, packing, goods issue, and shipment confirmation integrated with SD.

◦ Replenishment: fixed-bin and demand-driven replenishment, min/max logic, automatic TO generation between locations.

• Strong working knowledge of Logistics Execution (LE), including the interplay between LE-WM, LE-SHP, and LE-TRA – shipping points, route determination, delivery scheduling, shipment documents, and the connection between warehouse confirmation and SD billing.
• Experience leading cross-functional design sessions and producing solution design documents that business stakeholders can understand and sign off.
• Track record of governing master data design across MM and WM, understanding how material master and warehouse configuration decisions interact.
• Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Supply Chain, or a related field.

What Could Set You Apart:

• Experience with S/4HANA Embedded EWM or Decentralised EWM (dEWM), including advanced wave management, slotting, yard management, and labor management – and the ability to advise on the right WM architecture for the business context.
• Familiarity with SAP TM (Transportation Management) and how carrier management, freight costing, and proof-of-delivery integrate with EWM and SD to close the outbound loop.
• Exposure to SAP Batch Management and shelf-life management (FEFO) for businesses operating in regulated, food, or pharmaceutical environments.
• Experience integrating SAP WM/EWM with external systems – third-party logistics providers (3PL), warehouse control systems (WCS), manufacturing execution systems (MES), or automation platforms – via SAP BTP, PI/PO, or other middleware.
• Hands-on experience with SAP QM integration for goods-receipt inspection, usage decisions, and how quality holds interact with warehouse stock categories and bin availability.
• Knowledge of SAP Fiori apps for warehouse operations and an ability to design the mobile/RF user experience for warehouse staff alongside the backend WM configuration.
• Experience with warehouse automation – conveyors, ASRS, AGVs, sorters – and how WM/EWM interfaces with automation controllers to orchestrate physical material movement.
• Experience supporting global or multi-site SAP rollouts where warehouse configurations need to be standardised across geographies while accommodating local operational differences.
