The DC Government is seeking an entry-level Field Technician to help maintain and expand telecommunications infrastructure across 600+ facilities in and around the District of Columbia. This is a hands-on, field-based contract role combining technical installation work with logistical coordination. You will rotate across several internal service teams — including Fiber Maintenance, Data Center Facility, Voice Operations, Field Operations, and Warehouse.
What You''ll Do
• Install, upgrade, and remove telecommunications equipment and cabling at facilities across the DC metro area
• Mount and remove cabinets, racks, and ladder racks; install and troubleshoot wireless access points
• Conduct basic fiber and copper cabling work using tools such as multimeters, cable testers, and OTDRs
• Coordinate delivery, distribution, and inventory of equipment and materials to job sites
• Support field dispatch operations and maintain accurate inventory records
• Troubleshoot phone, wireless, and network issues alongside engineers
• Document work via notes, photos, and email summaries; maintain ticketing system records
• Communicate professionally with customers and internal teams throughout the workday
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED
• 2+ years of trade service experience (electrical helper, mechanical helper, alarm technician, handyman, automotive technician, or similar)
• 2+ years diagnosing and solving problems with telecom, electrical, or mechanical systems
• Ability to read technical instructions, drawings, and blueprints
• Proficient in spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets, or similar)
• Experience with SharePoint, OneDrive, or similar cloud file systems
• 1+ year using a ticketing system
• Valid driver''s license — travel to sites across the DC metro area required
Physical Requirements
• Able to lift and carry up to 125 lbs
• Comfortable working on ladders and on your feet for 6–8 hours per day
• Able to operate a motor vehicle for up to 8 hours per day
• Able to work in confined spaces (training provided)
• Willing to learn forklift operation (training provided)
Preferred / Nice to Have
• Experience with multimeters, current clamps, network cable testers, optical power meters, or OTDRs
• Familiarity with fiber splicing or fiber testing
• Basic knowledge of LAN infrastructure or wireless access points
• CompTIA A+ or BICSI certification (or willingness to pursue)
• Familiarity with ANSI, TIA/EIA, OSHA, or National Electric Code standards
Schedule & Work Arrangement
8-hour shifts between 6 AM and 11 PM, Monday through Friday. Occasional schedule adjustments may be required for maintenance windows outside regular hours. Assignments rotate daily and weekly across teams. Must be available to support emergency repairs as needed. This is a fully on-site role — no remote work. Candidates must be able to travel throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
