Backup Engineer

Position Purpose: 

The Backup Engineer is responsible for the installation, implementation, and ongoing management of the backup infrastructure for distributed Fiserv products. 

This position is part of a dedicated backup team that works closely with other engineering teams to provide technical support for all backup management-related activities. Depending on skill sets this position will perform work on specific vendor solutions within the Fiserv environment. This individual may also act as a liaison to other departments, representing the backup team on all technical matters related to backup and recovery management. 

This position requires a background in backup solutions, with a demonstrated ability to design and implement solutions, manage change, and add backup policies in a large-scale, mission critical, multi-PB backup environment. Strong organizational and communication skills are necessary.

Essential Job Responsibilities:   

• Improve enterprise quality and availability of storage backup engineered infrastructure components.  Continue to simplify, review, deploy and further improve: Automation of alerting, monitoring, reporting, maintenance, backup recovery, cyber solutions and business continuity/disaster recovery process.  
• Implementation, management and maintenance of backup solutions utilizing Rubrik, DDBoost, Data Domain, Infinidat InfiniBox
• Network knowledge, including bandwidth, NIC configuration, CIFS, NFS, and NDMP 
• Operating systems knowledge, including Windows and Linux, is required. ESX, AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris knowledge would be a plus
• New technology awareness and research skills are necessary
• 24x7 operations support and on-call support responsibilities for escalation
• Ability to work on project teams, delivering key project milestones, and communicating effectively with a wide variety of people
• Disaster Recovery infrastructure planning, building, and testing
• Experience in performance monitoring, performance tuning and capacity monitoring of backup infrastructure

Required Qualifications:

Education:  

• Bachelor’s degree highly preferred

Job Related Experience: 

• 4 - 7 years’ experience required
• Requires a strong technical background in industry standard IT technologies as it pertains to backup solutions, with the proven capability to implement and support complex environments
• Experience with Rubrik, Data Domain, and Infinidat InfiniBox custom reports is required, as is a strong knowledge of VMware, UNIX and Windows platforms
• Experience in an e-commerce environment is strongly desired, as is a working knowledge of networking protocols and components 
• Experience in performance monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity monitoring of backup infrastructure
• Automation of alerting, monitoring, reporting, maintenance, backup recovery, cyber solutions and business continuity/disaster recovery process.  As well as related scripting languages and integration, and/or orchestration tools such as:  Python, Perl, Ansible, Microsoft Power BI, and VMware vRealize (vRA and vRO), Spectrum Protect, Splunk and Moogsoft.   
• Project management and excellent troubleshooting skills are required

Additional Skills/Knowledge: (Optional)

• Storage administration of Isilon, NetApp, Infinidat, and Pure desired
• IBM TSM backup product experience a plus
• Veritas NetBackup product experience a plus
• High organizational skills
• Ability to handle multi-tasks and meet deadlines
