Job Summary:

The Apps Dev Supervisor is a hands-on leadership role responsible for driving the quality of our application software while managing a small, agile engineering team. The majority of this role involves active Quality Assurance-creating test plans, executing automated and manual tests, and ensuring application stability. Additionally, the Apps Dev Supervisor provides direct supervision, mentorship, and task management for one Developer and one QA Analyst, ensuring the team delivers high-quality code on schedule. Currently a hybrid position (3 days in the office and 2 days remote).

Job Duties:

Responsibilities include:
Test Strategy & Execution: Design, develop, and execute comprehensive test plans, test cases, and scripts for new application features and system updates.
Automation Management: Build and maintain automated testing frameworks to improve efficiency and testing coverage across our applications.
Defect Tracking: Identify, document, and track software defects; verify bug fixes and coordinate with the development team to resolve structural issues.
Release Management: Act one of the gatekeepers for code releases, ensuring all applications meet strict quality, security, and performance standards before deployment.
Team Management: Directly supervise a small technical team (1 Developer, 1 QA), overseeing their day-to-day tasks, sprint planning, and workload distribution.
Mentorship: Provide technical guidance, conduct code and test-case reviews, and support the professional development of your direct reports.
Code Review: Review pull requests from the developer to ensure coding standards, security, and architectural guidelines are met. Technical Collaboration: Partner with the developer to troubleshoot complex application bugs, optimize queries, or resolve infrastructure issues as needed.
Performance Tracking: Conduct regular 1-on-1s, perform annual performance reviews, and ensure the team is meeting its KPIs and project deadlines.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
Leadership: Proven experience mentoring, leading, or supervising technical staff.
Thorough knowledge of service offerings, customer service principles and processes, back-office server applications, desktop applications, web-based applications, client/server applications, computer/networking hardware, standard operating systems, common third-party software applications, internally developed custom applications, application integrations, networking protocols, and any other computer-related technologies.

Skilled in:
QA & Dev Tools: Proficient in testing frameworks (Playwright), bug tracking (ADO), and version control (e.g., Git).
Code Literacy: Ability to read/understand code (e.g., JavaScript, Python, C#) to review developer work and write automated tests.
Workflow Management: Capable of running Agile/Scrum sprint planning for a small team.
Communication: Ability to clearly translate complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
Strong customer service skills Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to details.

Ability to:
Analytical & Detail-Oriented: A meticulous eye for spotting subtle bugs, predicting edge cases, and identifying root causes of structural failures.
Adaptability: Ability to seamlessly pivot between deep, focused QA testing and high-level supervisory tasks.
Coaching: The emotional intelligence to constructively critique code and test plans to foster team growth.
Decisiveness: The confidence to act as the final gatekeeper for production-ready deployments.

Selective Preference(s):
Bachelor's degree plus 3 or more years of experience as a leader on an agile team.
Any QA, Engineering, Agile or Scrum Certifications preferred.

Retirement:

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will contribute to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution.
