- Ellucian Banner Application Administration. Executing upgrades/patches via Ellucian Solution Manager (ESM), managing module update cycles (Financial Aid, General, AR, Registration).
- Oracle Database Administration. Banner runs entirely on Oracle 19c or newer, hosted in OCI. Manages Dev, Pre-Prod, and Production environments. Day-to-day Oracle work is largely ESM-driven; must still be comfortable with performance, security, and environment cloning. OCP certification preferred, not required.
- Linux RHEL 8/9 Command Line. Used during upgrades to edit config files (e.g., web.xml), redeploy modules, manage services. Any experienced Banner DBA should have this inherently, but it is ok if not.
Strongly preferred: Apache Tomcat / Java Middleware. Banner runs on Tomcat; candidate will restart services and manage deployments. Anyone who has managed Banner upgrades end-to-end should have this.
Job Description
Contract to hire Banner DBA supporting a 50,000-student Ellucian Banner 9.x environment on Oracle/OCI.
Key responsibilities:
Execute Banner application upgrades and patches via ESM (~quarterly major upgrades; Financial Aid compliance patches ~every 2 months)
Administer Oracle 19c databases across Dev, Pre-Prod, and Production
Promote DB objects between environments; redeploy application pages for development team
Triage SIS tickets; provide root-cause analysis and technical support
Collaborate daily with AIS team, Oracle DBA, and functional leads (Financial Aid, General, AR, Registration)
Perform environment cloning to support testing cycles
Reports to IT Manager, OIT (Office of Innovative Technologies). Sole Banner DBA until second hire (in process) onboards. Production upgrades run at 7:00 AM ET; occasional after-hours windows. Long-term contract with strong perm conversion path - open headcount exists.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
OCI experience - Banner is already in OCI; helpful but not required for daily work
OCP or OCI Architect certification - preferred, not required
MS SQL Server - minor backup coverage only; not a primary requirement
Banner Data Warehouse - cross-training helpful; colleague owns it day-to-day
Higher Education experience - strongly preferred; accelerates onboarding significantly
Eastern Time Zone - soft preference; outgoing DBA was MT and it created friction around 7:00 AM ET upgrade windows
Education: Bachelor''s in CS/IS or equivalent work experience
