Role Summary
The Mainframe z/OS Administrator is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and performance management of IBM Mainframe environments running z/OS. This role ensures high availability, security, compliance, and operational stability of mission‑critical enterprise applications and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
🖥️ z/OS System Administration
· Install, configure, and maintain IBM z/OS operating systems and related system software.
· Manage IPL activities, system upgrades, patches, and preventive maintenance.
· Monitor system health, performance, and capacity to ensure optimal operation.
⚙️ System Performance & Availability
· Perform performance tuning using RMF, SMF, SDSF, and related tools.
· Analyze CPU, memory, DASD, and workload performance to proactively address bottlenecks.
· Ensure high availability and disaster recovery readiness.
🔐 Security & Compliance
· Implement and maintain security controls using RACF (or ACF2/Top Secret as applicable).
· Manage user access, roles, permissions, and auditing.
· Support internal and external audits and ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
📦 Storage & Dataset Management
· Manage DASD, catalogs, datasets, VTOC, and space allocation.
· Perform dataset cleanup, reorganization, and storage optimization activities.
· Coordinate with storage teams for capacity planning and performance improvements.
🔄 Change, Incident & Problem Management
· Participate in change management, including risk analysis and implementation planning.
· Troubleshoot and resolve system incidents, abends, and outages.
· Provide root cause analysis and permanent fixes for recurring issues.
🧩 Middleware & Subsystem Support
· Support and integrate key subsystems such as CICS, DB2, IMS, JES2/JES3.
· Coordinate closely with application, database, and infrastructure teams during deployments and issues.
📑 Documentation & Knowledge Management
· Maintain system documentation, procedures, and runbooks.
· Provide operational support documentation and knowledge transfer to support teams.
Required Skills & Experience
✅ Technical Skills
· Strong hands‑on experience with IBM z/OS administration.
· In‑depth knowledge of JES2/JES3, SDSF, SMF, RMF, and system utilities.
· Working knowledge of CICS, DB2, IMS, and batch environments.
· Experience with RACF security administration.
· Familiarity with ISPF, JCL, and system scripting.
✅ Experience
· Typically 12–14+ years of experience in Mainframe z/OS environments (role‑dependent).
· Experience supporting large‑scale, mission‑critical production systems.
· Exposure to 24×7 operations, on‑call rotations, and major incident handling.
