Job Description – Mainframe z/VM Administrator (2 Positions)
Role Summary
The Mainframe z/VM Administrator is responsible for the administration, configuration, and operational support of IBM z/VM virtualization environments. This role ensures high availability, performance, security, and efficient resource utilization of Linux and guest operating systems hosted on IBM Mainframe platforms.
Key Responsibilities
🖥️ z/VM System Administration
· Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade the IBM z/VM operating system.
· Manage z/VM CP, CMS, and related virtualization components.
· Support provisioning, cloning, and lifecycle management of Linux on z virtual machines.
⚙️ Virtualization & Resource Management
· Administer and optimize CPU, memory, I/O, and network resources across z/VM guest systems.
· Monitor resource usage and ensure fair allocation and performance efficiency.
· Perform system tuning to support scalable and stable virtualized workloads.
📦 Guest OS & Linux Support
· Support multiple Linux distributions on z, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
· Coordinate with Linux administrators and application teams to ensure guest OS stability.
· Assist with patching and maintenance activities for virtual guests.
🔐 Security & Access Control
· Implement and maintain z/VM security controls, including directory management and access authorization.
· Coordinate with RACF or external security teams where z/VM integrates with enterprise security controls.
· Support audit requirements and compliance initiatives.
📊 Monitoring, Performance & Capacity Planning
· Monitor system performance using z/VM tools and performance reports.
· Perform trend analysis and capacity planning to support growth and modernization initiatives.
· Proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
🔄 Incident, Change & Problem Management
· Provide L2/L3 support for z/VM‑related incidents and outages.
· Participate in change management processes, including risk assessment and validation.
· Perform root cause analysis and implement long‑term corrective actions.
🔁 Backup, Recovery & High Availability
· Support backup and recovery processes for z/VM systems and guest environments.
· Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution.
· Ensure system resiliency and quick recovery in case of failures.
📑 Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
· Maintain up‑to‑date architecture diagrams, procedures, and operational runbooks.
· Provide knowledge transfer and support handovers to operations teams.
· Contribute to continuous improvement and automation initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience
✅ Technical Skills
· Strong experience with IBM z/VM administration.
· Good working knowledge of Linux on z Systems.
· Understanding of mainframe virtualization concepts, networking, and storage.
· Experience with system monitoring, tuning, and performance analysis tools.
✅ Experience
· Typically 5–10+ years of experience in Mainframe or large‑scale virtualized environments.
· Proven experience supporting mission‑critical, 24×7 production systems.
· Exposure to enterprise incident, change, and problem management processes.
