Department 451 (D451) Waterfront Electrical Engineering is an integral part of Electric Boat's New Construction business. Additionally, interaction with the United States Navy (USN) customer is typical, including the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Groton (SOSG), Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), subcontractors, and submarine crews.

Awareness and understanding of military specifications, submarine shipbuilding specifications and design criteria, USN maintenance/overhaul requirements, and special emphasis programs are developed through mentoring and training.
