Description of Work

The employee in this position will function as an Engineering Technician I based in the Division 1 / District 2 Field Office located in Ahoskie, North Carolina. This position supports higher level technicians and engineers in functional areas such as construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, and construction traffic control. Work functions may include entering specific project information into Sharepoint / Shareplus. Position duties include the performance of a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data. The employee must be proficient in record keeping with the ability to obtain and maintain certifications needed to perform material sampling and testing related to this position. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. The employee may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary. This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. The employee must be able to perform a full range of calculations and computations.

Additionally, the employee must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle. The employee may be assigned to work on the survey party and perform surveying task as assigned or may be assigned to inspect roadway and bridge projects, all in accordance with established policies and procedures. The employee will need to have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments, to read plan details to make accurate field measurements, and to inspect roadway and structure components. Applicants must have the ability to perform entry level technical work in a specific materials area or perform sampling, testing and inspection duties to determine specifications. The employee may be exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic, and must climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. The employee will be expected to work outside in various types of weather, terrain, and hours. The employee must be able to lift 50 lbs. The applicant will be required to attend and pass certifications for various sampling and testing classes and obtain / maintain QMS Asphalt and Concrete Testing certifications. Safety toe shoes are required for this position.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade: NC07 Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408

Management prefers applicants with the following:
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
  • Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad, and software
  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and /or construction surveying

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up, accordingly, when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education and experience to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
