Summary

Job Summary

General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world's leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an early-to-mid-career Mechanical Engineer to support development of disruptive technologies in partnership with the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF & PS) Directorate at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL). This is a permanent position located in Livermore, CA, with significant travel to San Diego, CA.

The Cryogenic System cools targets filled with hydrogen isotopes to the temperatures required to liquefy and/or solidify the gas. This device then locates targets at the focus of the NIF Laser's 192 beams with an accuracy of a few microns. The combination of thermal and mechanical requirements, the verification of system performance, and the demands for ease and robustness of operation poses a unique set of challenges. The ideal candidate for this role is a highly motivated multi-disciplinary engineer or scientist with a passion for hands-on laboratory work. You will provide innovative technical solutions for newly emerging and continuously tightening systems requirements, which need to be tested and verified.

Other projects may include providing engineering support to Inertial Fusion Energy programs and outside partners in the development of innovative energy solutions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborates with a team of engineers, technicians, and scientists on conceptual, innovative resolutions to some of the most highly technical and complex engineering problems.
  • Responsible for mechanical design solutions, developing test plans, preparing samples, and testing these samples to demonstrate performance.
  • Able to both design innovative solutions and to convert legacy designs into modern systems
  • Analyzes test data, authors test plans and reports results to the larger team.
  • Special emphasis on problem resolution.
  • Identifies upgrades to improve system performance, ease of assembly, efficiency, and reliability, interacts with design team to develop detailed designs and collaborate with technicians to build, or modify specialized process equipment.
  • Responsible for development of test stands, which includes basic hardware / software integration
  • Performs work safely in a laboratory.
  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.

Job Qualifications

  • Experience working hands-on in a laboratory environment or workshop.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow and apply basic engineering knowledge, adapt standard techniques, and utilize the required diagnostics, tools and equipment, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Must be able to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Interested in developing moderately complex systems or subsystems from concept to acceptance test.
  • Experience operating PC computers to collect, analyze, and document scientific results.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to communicate in a dynamic /multi-disciplinary environment, which includes scientists, engineers, technicians, and designers.
  • Must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment.
