Description:
Job Title: Tool Designer
Location: Waterloo, IA
Duration: 24 months with possible extension

Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering Excellence
  • Develop precise 3D models and detailed 2D drawings suitable for production
  • Apply knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods to ensure effective designs
Manufacturing-Focused Approach
  • Design with machining, assembly, and adjustability in mind
  • Apply appropriate tolerances to ensure functionality without unnecessary complexity
  • Consider cost, lead time, and shop capabilities early in the design process
Detail-Oriented Execution
  • Create clear and accurate drawings that reduce shop-floor questions
  • Follow established drafting standards and documentation practices
  • Maintain revision control and communicate design changes effectively
Collaboration & Communication
  • Clearly convey design intent through drawings and technical discussions
  • Partner closely with machinists, welders, inspectors, and other stakeholders
  • Incorporate feedback from the shop floor to improve design outcomes
Problem Solving & Adaptability
  • Approach challenges with practical, solution-driven thinking
  • Adjust quickly to changing requirements or constraints
  • Balance simplicity with performance and functional needs
Ownership & Accountability
  • Take ownership of designs from concept through build and testing
  • Address issues, corrections, and improvements proactively
  • Apply lessons learned to continuously enhance future designs
Qualifications
  • Experience with Creo or other solid modeling tools
  • Knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing processes
  • Engineering background required
Preferred Skills
  • Programming knowledge (C++, Python, SQL)
  • Project management experience
  • Exposure to supply chain, purchasing, or vendor management
Additional Information
  • Candidates with 5+ years of tool design experience are strongly preferred
  • entry level candidates should have relevant internships and hands-on experience with CAD tools such as Creo or Solid Modeling
