Summary

Job Description

United States Steel Corporation has an immediate opening for a Metallurgical Engineer in our Product Applications Engineering / Customer Technical Service Engineering organization. This position will manage customer quality relationships, advocate for customer needs, and drive alignment with internal USS functions to meet or exceed expectations for product quality and service. The role supports assigned customer accounts and supply chain processors, requires regular travel to customer, processor, and mill locations, and may require relocation depending on territory needs.

Responsibilities include the following:
  • Serve as the single point of contact and customers advocate for assigned accounts.
  • Manage quality relationships with customers, mills, processors, and internal USS teams.
  • Monitor quality performance across the supply chain and proactively communicate potential issues, concerns, and corrective actions.
  • Investigate and disposition rejected material at customer or processor locations.
  • Drive structured problem solving, root cause analysis, corrective actions, containment, and continuous improvement in product quality and process efficiency.
  • Review, approve, and accurately transfer customer specifications, requirements, and processing instructions to mills and processors.
  • Work with mills and processors to establish material boundary samples, quality standards, testing methods, and evaluation techniques.
  • Understand and communicate mill and processor capabilities, limitations, product quality standards, customer specifications, and industry standards.
  • Coordinate quality activities with corporate, mill, processor, and customer quality departments.
  • Document results in the appropriate claim or quality system, following established policies.
  • Contribute to technical developments, best practice sharing, and company-wide quality improvement initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, another closely related engineering field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5-8 years of related experience in quality, customer technical service, sheet metal forming, production stamping manufacturing, die process engineering, steel industry operations, or flat roll/sheet product applications.
  • Experience with structured problem solving, proactive quality resolution, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and customer-facing quality support.
  • Knowledge of steel quality requirements, sources of quality issues, sheet processing, product performance, formability, coatings, and customer application requirements preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to customer, processor, and mill locations throughout the United States. Expected travel: 50-75%.
  • Ability to work remotely with minimal direct supervision.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of quality tools and methodologies such as Six Sigma, Lean, 8D/5D, A3, DMAIC, PDCA, 5Y, and Shainin Strategies.
  • Strong communication, presentation, problem-solving, project management, and program management skills.
  • Ability to influence and lead cross-functional teams in a matrix environment.
  • Strong continuous improvement mindset, sense of urgency, and focus on cost avoidance and quality performance.
  • Understanding of mill product quality standards, customer specifications, industry standards, and producing mill or outside processor capabilities and limitations.
  • Sheet mill process/product experience, business acumen, and experience leading change or developing others on quality principles preferred.
