Summary

Job Description: Regression Test Engineer

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Regression Test Engineer to support quality assurance for our Data Warehouse and SQL Server based data environment. The role will be responsible for performing independent regression testing at the release level and as required for significant application, data, ETL, or database changes.

The Development team is responsible for development and initial functional/unit level testing. The Regression Test Engineer will provide an additional, independent validation layer to ensure that new changes have not adversely impacted existing functionality, data integrity, downstream processes, or established business logic.

The ideal candidate should have strong hands on experience with SQL Server, SQL querying, data validation, ETL/data warehouse testing, regression testing, and release level testing. The ability to understand data flows and identify the potential impact of changes across the data warehouse ecosystem is critical.

Key Responsibilities

Regression Testing

  • Perform independent regression testing for scheduled releases, production deployments, major enhancements, defect fixes, and other changes as required.
  • Review release scope, requirements, technical changes, and impacted data processes to determine appropriate regression coverage.
  • Develop and execute regression test scenarios covering existing functionality and potentially impacted downstream processes.
  • Validate that new changes have not introduced defects into previously working functionality.
  • Perform targeted regression testing based on the risk and impact of the release rather than relying solely on predefined test cases.
  • Identify gaps in existing regression coverage and recommend additional test scenarios where appropriate.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the regression test suite.

SQL Server & Data Validation

  • Develop and execute complex SQL queries to validate data accuracy, completeness, consistency, and integrity.
  • Compare source and target data to validate ETL/data transformation processes.
  • Validate record counts, aggregations, data relationships, business rules, transformations, and key data attributes.
  • Perform data reconciliation across staging, warehouse, and downstream layers where applicable.
  • Investigate data discrepancies and determine whether issues are related to source data, transformation logic, database changes, or application behavior.
  • Validate database objects and changes, including tables, views, stored procedures, functions, and other SQL Server components as applicable.
  • Use SQL based analysis to support defect investigation and root cause identification.

Release Level Testing

  • Participate in the release planning and readiness process from a QA/regression perspective.
  • Review release content and identify areas requiring regression testing based on technical and functional impact.
  • Execute regression testing within agreed release timelines.
  • Document test execution results, defects, risks, and outstanding issues.
  • Provide a clear QA/regression status and release recommendation based on test results.
  • Support post deployment validation when required, including smoke testing and critical data validation.

Defect Management

  • Identify, document, and track defects with clear reproduction steps, expected results, actual results, and supporting SQL/data evidence.
  • Work closely with developers and business/functional stakeholders to analyze and resolve defects.
  • Perform defect retesting and regression testing following fixes.
  • Participate in defect triage and provide technical input regarding severity, impact, and regression risk.
  • Assist with root cause analysis using SQL and data level investigation.

Test Automation & Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to automate repetitive regression and data validation scenarios.
  • Develop reusable SQL scripts and test utilities to improve testing efficiency and consistency.
  • Establish and maintain repeatable regression test processes and standards.
  • Contribute to improving test coverage, traceability, and release quality.
  • Recommend improvements to the overall QA and release validation process.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) or other ETL technologies.
  • Experience with enterprise data warehouse environments.
  • Experience testing stored procedures, views, functions, and database changes.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and release management processes.
  • Experience with test automation or scripting.
  • Familiarity with data quality and data reconciliation frameworks.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum or similar development environments.

Core Competencies

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to understand complex data flows and identify potential areas of regression risk.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong focus on data accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Ability to use SQL and data analysis to investigate issues and determine potential root causes.
  • Risk Based Testing: Ability to prioritize testing based on business and technical impact.
  • Independence: Ability to independently plan and execute regression testing while collaborating effectively with Development and other stakeholders.
  • Communication: Ability to clearly communicate test results, risks, defects, and release readiness.
  • Ownership: Takes accountability for regression coverage and quality validation within assigned releases.

Role in the Software Delivery Lifecycle

The Regression Test Engineer operates as an independent quality gate within the release process:

The role is not intended to duplicate the Development team's testing activities. Instead, it provides an independent, risk based validation of the release, with particular focus on protecting existing functionality, data integrity, and critical data warehouse processes from unintended impact.

Success in This Role

Success will be measured by the ability to:

  • Consistently identify regressions before production deployment.
  • Provide reliable and repeatable release level test coverage.
  • Detect data integrity and transformation issues through effective SQL based validation.
  • Reduce production defects resulting from changes to existing functionality.
  • Provide clear, evidence based assessments of release quality and risk.
  • Continuously improve regression coverage, test efficiency, and testing processes.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related technical field.

Experience:

·         8+ years of strong hands on experience with Microsoft SQL Server.

  • Advanced SQL skills, including complex queries, joins, subqueries, CTEs, aggregations, window functions, and data reconciliation.
  • Strong understanding of Data Warehouse concepts and architectures.
  • Experience testing ETL/data integration and data transformation processes.
  • Strong experience in regression testing and release level testing.
  • Experience validating large volumes of data and identifying data quality issues.
  • Ability to understand data flows and assess the impact of database, ETL, and application changes.
  • Experience with defect tracking and test management tools.
  • Strong understanding of software development and QA life cycles.
  • Ability to analyze technical requirements and translate them into effective test scenarios.
