SAP Payroll & Benefits Specialist
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced SAP Payroll & Benefits Specialist to support and manage end to end payroll and benefits operations within SAP. This role has a strong focus on payroll processing, tax configuration, benefits administration, and system integrations, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll delivery.
The ideal candidate brings hands on experience supporting live payroll environments, deep SAP technical configuration expertise, and a strong understanding of U.S. payroll and taxation requirements.
Key Responsibilities
SAP Payroll & Tax (Core Focus)
- Configure, maintain, and support SAP Payroll (PY) for U.S. and Canada
- Own the end to end payroll process, including:
- Pre payroll validation
- Payroll and off cycle runs
- Post payroll activities
- Garnishments and third party remittances
- Payroll posting and interfaces
- Configure and maintain tax models, schemas, PCRs, wage types, rules, and paycheck forms
- Support year end processing, including W 2, W 2c, T 4, and tax reconciliation
- Integrate with and support third party tax vendors (e.g., tax engines and payroll service providers)
- Troubleshoot payroll discrepancies, tax errors, retro calculations, and posting issues
Benefits Configuration & Integrations
- Configure and support SAP Benefits (BN), including:
- New benefit plans
- Eligibility and enrollment
- Deductions and retroactivity
- Manage benefit related payroll deductions and employer contributions
- Support and troubleshoot benefits vendor integrations, including inbound/outbound interfaces, files, IDocs, and APIs
- Ensure accurate mapping of benefits to payroll wage types
Technical Configuration & System Support
- Configure and debug:
- Payroll schemas and PCRs
- Wage types and infotypes
- Posting rules and payroll logs
- Perform root cause analysis for payroll and benefits issues and deliver permanent fixes
- Support payroll posting to Finance (FI) and reconciliation activities
- Participate in system upgrades, support packs, and enhancement initiatives
- Execute unit and integration testing; support UAT and parallel payroll runs
Compliance, Controls & Audits
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations
- Support internal and external audits, controls, and compliance documentation
- Implement payroll and benefits changes driven by legislative or regulatory updates
Required Qualifications
Technical Experience (Must Have)
- 5+ years of hands on experience with SAP Payroll, Tax, and Benefits (ECC and/or S/4HANA)
- Hands on experience supporting live payroll operations, not just implementations
- Strong experience with:
- SAP Payroll schemas and PCRs
- Wage type configuration
- Tax models and tax reporting
- Benefits configuration and payroll integration
- Experience supporting U.S. payroll and taxation (international exposure is a plus)
Tools & Systems Experience
- SAP HCM / SAP Payroll (PY)
- SAP Benefits (BN)
- Payroll posting to Finance (FI)
- Third party tax or benefits vendors
- Payroll debugging tools and logs
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with SAP S/4HANA Payroll or Payroll on HANA
- Experience with SuccessFactors Employee Central
- Understanding of SAP CPI and SuccessFactors integration concepts
- Exposure to time and attendance systems and their impact on payroll
- Experience in large, complex, or unionized payroll environments
- Payroll or tax certifications (e.g., CPP, FPC, SAP certification)
- Experience supporting multi state or multi country payrolls
