Business Analyst / Business Systems Analyst (BSA)

Position Overview
Client is seeking a Business Analyst / Business Systems Analyst (BSA) to support its Student Academic Reporting team. This is a technical, client-facing position that combines business analysis, requirements gathering, report development, and hands-on SQL.
This individual will work directly with internal business stakeholders and development teams to understand student academic reporting needs, gather and document requirements, write detailed SQL and reporting specifications, and help develop and enhance reporting solutions.
Strong SQL skills are the top priority for this position. Experience with Ellucian Banner and Evisions Argos is preferred but not required. The team is open to training candidates on Banner and Argos who bring strong SQL, analytical, and business-facing capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet with internal business stakeholders to understand student academic reporting needs and translate those needs into technical solutions.
- Gather, analyze, and document business, functional, and technical requirements.
- Write detailed requirements for SQL queries, reports, data extracts, and reporting specifications.
- Translate business requirements into clear data requirements, business rules, reporting logic, and technical specifications.
- Develop, modify, and maintain student academic reports and data extracts.
- Write complex SQL queries from scratch across multiple tables and data sources.
- Utilize advanced SQL techniques including complex joins, CTEs, subqueries, and window functions.
- Work with stored procedures and PL/SQL as needed.
- Troubleshoot and optimize SQL queries for accuracy and performance.
- Query and analyze data residing in Oracle, PostgreSQL, and enterprise data marts.
- Work with student data housed within the Banner environment.
- Partner closely with business stakeholders and developers throughout requirements gathering, development, testing, and delivery.
- Validate reporting results and ensure solutions accurately address business requirements.
- Communicate technical concepts and reporting requirements effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Required Qualifications
- Strong hands-on SQL experience.
- Ability to write complex SQL queries independently from scratch.
- Experience working with complex joins across multiple tables and datasets.
- Strong knowledge of advanced SQL concepts including:
- CTEs
- Subqueries
- Window functions
- Complex joins
- Experience with stored procedures and/or PL/SQL.
- Experience building data extracts and reporting datasets.
- Experience troubleshooting and optimizing SQL queries.
- Business Analyst or Business Systems Analyst experience within a technical environment.
- Experience gathering and documenting business and technical requirements.
- Experience writing detailed SQL and/or report specifications.
- Ability to translate business reporting needs into technical and data requirements.
- Strong client-facing communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with both business stakeholders and technical/development teams.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate combines strong technical SQL capabilities with the communication and analytical skills of a Business Analyst/BSA. This individual should be comfortable meeting directly with business stakeholders, understanding and clarifying reporting needs, translating those needs into detailed SQL and report specifications, and working hands-on with data to develop or update reporting solutions.
Candidates do not need to already be experts in Banner or Argos. Strong SQL skills, the ability to write effective requirements, and the personality and communication skills to work directly with Client stakeholders are the primary priorities.
