Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Systems Administrator to support the Transportation Operations Center. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on systems administration experience, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment. This role involves administering Linux (Red Hat) and Windows systems, responding to Tier 1 3 support requests, maintaining system reliability, and supporting cybersecurity initiatives.
The Systems Administrator is responsible for the effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of hardware, software, and related infrastructure in compliance with Commonwealth policies, standards, and guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Systems Administration & Operations
- Install, configure, rebuild, and maintain Linux (Red Hat) and Windows servers.
- Configure hardware, peripherals, services, directories, storage, and system settings in accordance with standards and operational requirements.
- Perform daily system monitoring to ensure integrity, availability, and performance of servers, services, and key processes.
- Review system and application logs and verify successful completion of scheduled jobs (e.g., backups).
- Apply operating system patches, updates, and upgrades on a regular basis.
- Configure and deploy new or replacement desktop and laptop equipment and peripherals.
Support & Troubleshooting
- Respond to Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 support requests.
- Resolve break/fix issues related to end-user systems and server resources.
- Investigate, diagnose, and recover from hardware and software failures.
- Resolve connectivity issues between users and system resources.
- Coordinate and communicate effectively with impacted users and stakeholders.
Documentation & Asset Management
- Maintain up-to-date system, project, and architecture documentation.
- Maintain accurate inventory, configuration, and maintenance records.
- Create, modify, and delete user accounts as requested.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Perform regular backups, file archiving, and data purging.
- Conduct performance reporting to support capacity planning.
- Perform performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization.
- Support upgrades and configuration of system software for GIS or Asset Management applications as needed.
Required Qualifications
- 3 5 years of experience as a Systems Administrator.
- Strong experience supporting both Linux (Red Hat) and Windows environments.
- Experience providing Tier 1 3 technical support.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical users.
- Strong customer service orientation.
