Applications Architect / Functional Architect (Part Time) Remote

Job Description

The City of Columbus Department of Technology is seeking a part‑time, senior Applications Architect with strong business analysis and project management experience to assess the functionality of approximately 20 custom-built applications and research options for replacing each.

The applications are primarily built using C# with SQL backends. This role involves working closely with business users, subject‑matter experts, and technical teams to document functional requirements, analyze business processes, and recommend modernization or replacement solutions.

The Architect will lead workshops, produce business and architecture documentation, research replacement options (COTS/SaaS/rebuild/retire), and present recommendations to leadership and executives. This role will also direct the work of a Business Analyst.

Onsite or virtual meetings with city employees will typically occur between 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Independent work can be completed on a flexible schedule outside of meetings.

Technical Environment

Required Qualifications

• 4‑year college degree or equivalent technical education
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Experience working directly with business users and executives
• Ability to lead structured workshops and discovery sessions
• Experience in public sector or large enterprise environments (preferred)
