Payroll & Benefits Specialist (15-Month Contract)Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid - up to 2 days onsite)

The OpportunityWe are seeking an exceptional
Payroll & Benefits Specialist to join a high-performing payroll team supporting a complex, advisor-driven organization. This role goes well beyond routine processing-you will own end-to-end, multi-provincial payroll and act as a trusted partner to HR and Finance, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and an exceptional employee experience.
This is a high-impact role ideal for a payroll professional who thrives in fast-paced, detail-driven environments and enjoys working through system integrations, complex compensation structures, and tight payroll deadlines.
Key ResponsibilitiesPayroll Operations- Process end-to-end, multi-provincial payroll (including Quebec) for 900+ employees, covering salaried and commissioned populations
- Prepare, review, and approve full-cycle payroll, including earnings, deductions, taxes, benefits, bonuses, commission pay, garnishments, severance, and third-party payments
- Ensure payroll remittances, statutory deductions, and compliance requirements are met accurately and on time
- Create and submit Records of Employment (ROEs) through Service Canada
Data Integrity & Reporting- Maintain accuracy and integrity across payroll, benefits, retirement, and share purchase systems
- Perform monthly and ad-hoc payroll reconciliations
- Support statutory and legislative reporting (e.g., WSIB, EHT, Statistics Canada)
- Assist with year-end activities including T4s, T2200s, and payroll reconciliations
- Run reports, perform advanced Excel analysis, and support audits (internal and external)
Benefits & Retirement Administration- Administer benefits and retirement plan enrollments, changes, and terminations
- Coordinate data feeds between payroll and benefits providers
- Support employees and managers with payroll and benefits inquiries using a high-touch, white-glove approach
Collaboration & Projects- Partner closely with HR and Finance on payroll-related initiatives
- Support system integrations and payroll transformation projects (including Workday payroll integration)
- Document payroll processes, support audit readiness, and contribute to SOPs or training materials
- Provide backup payroll coverage as required
Qualifications & Experience- 5-7 years of progressive payroll experience
- Strong experience administering employee benefits
- Proven expertise in multi-provincial Canadian payroll, including Quebec
- Experience processing commission-based compensation
- Completion of PCP designation (or in progress); equivalent payroll certification considered
- Advanced Excel skills, including reporting and reconciliations
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities under tight timelines
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex payroll concepts clearly
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
Assets- Experience with Ceridian Dayforce (Workday payroll exposure is preferred)
- Experience in wealth management or financial services environments
- Experience supporting payroll through system implementations or M&A integrations
- Bilingualism (English/French) is a bonus but not required
