Server Engineer - Active Directory

Location: Austin, Texas (Remote)

Employment Type: Contract

Role Overview

A senior Server Engineer is needed for a 5-6 month contract to modernize and automate core Windows, Active Directory, and endpoint management operations. This role is centered on reducing manual effort, increasing operational maturity, and improving scalability across AD, Intune, and endpoint tooling. The primary objectives are to reduce manual operational workload through automation, improve the hygiene of AD and Intune ecosystems, and enable the service desk and infrastructure teams to operate more efficiently.

Key Responsibilities
  • Upgrade and maintain Windows server and client operating systems.
  • Design and develop automation scripts for Intune device management and Active Directory user and device lifecycle management.
  • Conduct a thorough review and targeted redesign of Group Policy Objects (GPOs).
  • Implement reporting and automation to identify and remediate stale devices, orphaned AD objects, inactive endpoints, and compliance issues.
  • Improve endpoint lifecycle management, including device onboarding, offboarding, and deprecation workflows.
  • Optimize BigFix usage by reducing manual software installs and increasing automation maturity.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally and interface directly with business stakeholders when required.
Required Qualifications
  • Extensive Active Directory expertise.
  • Strong hands-on experience with OS upgrades and legacy-to-modern transitions.
  • Proven scripting ability in PowerShell or an equivalent language for automation and reporting.
  • Solid experience with Intune, including conditional access concepts.
  • Experience with endpoint management platforms.
  • Ability to operate independently in environments with partial tool adoption and limited documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BigFix administration and optimization.
  • Endpoint lifecycle automation at scale.
  • Experience modernizing legacy environments.
  • Exposure to Nutanix environments.
Compensation & Benefits

The pay rate for this position is between $60.00 and $72.00 per hour. Specific compensation will be determined based on the candidate's experience, qualifications, and geographic location. We offer a comprehensive benefits package to eligible employees.
