R&D Hardware Senior Mechanical Sustaining Engineer

About the The Role,

The Senior Mechanical Sustaining Engineer provides technical and project leadership for Packsize's value engineering efforts. This role helps lead a small team of engineers while remaining hands-on in value engineering work. The position is accountable for planning, prioritizing, and delivering measurable cost-reduction initiatives across machine platforms.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and prioritize value engineering initiatives across multiple machine platforms

  • Analyze machine architectures for standardization, simplification, and reuse opportunities

  • Drive modularity and platform thinking across mechanical and electro-mechanical systems

  • Provide technical leadership and direction to other engineers

  • Own project planning, execution, and reporting of cost-reduction initiatives

  • Perform system-level design trade studies balancing cost, performance, reliability, and serviceability

  • Partner cross-functionally with Procurement, Manufacturing, Service, Quality, and Supply Chain

  • Review and approve engineering changes and ensure proper ECO/ECN execution

  • Mentor engineers in design-to-cost, DFM/DFA, and value engineering methodologies

What You'll Bring

  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field

  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design and sustaining engineering

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in technical or project-based roles

  • Proven track record of delivering measurable BOM and lifecycle cost reductions

  • Strong project management and cross-functional coordination skills

  • Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD and engineering change processes

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to electrical systems, sensors, PLCs, and general industrial controls

  • Experience working directly with suppliers and contract manufacturers

  • Background in modular product platforms or configurable machine systems

  • Hands-on prototyping and machine build experience

A Few Other Things

Up to 15% travel as needed.
