Job Description:
Databricks Architect

Location: Remote

Duration: 3 month contract to start with potential to extend

Rate: $75-82/hr.

Role Overview

The Databricks Architect is responsible for leading the design, architecture, and implementation of the Data Intelligence Platform Enablement Framework. This role will establish and enforce architecture standards, best practices, and technical patterns across the enterprise data ecosystem, ensuring scalable, secure, and governed solutions built on Databricks and Azure. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader who will provide technical direction to engineering teams, guide platform adoption, and ensure the Data Intelligence Platform enables analytics, AI, data products, and self-service consumption across the enterprise.

Must Haves:
    • SME in implementing Databricks into an environment from Greenfield to standing up in Azure
    • Expertise in Unity Catalog and Security standards design inside of Databricks
    • Deep expertise in modern Lakehouse Architecture and enterprise data platforms
    • Terraform provisioning expertise

  • Unity Catalog Permissions Redesign and Security Model: There's an urgent need to redesign and granularly secure the Unity Catalog permissions in Databricks. Currently the networking team has ownership of Terraform, and there's a lack of a process for timely changes.
    • Current State and Challenges: All Databricks configuration, including Unity Catalog permissions, is currently managed through a Terraform repository owned by the networking team, while the data services team only has access but cannot make direct changes, leading to delays and lack of flexibility.
    • Desired End State: The team is open to either managing Unity Catalog permissions through Terraform or natively within Databricks, as long as the solution achieves granular, row-level security and reduces broad access.
    • Redesign vs. Cleanup: A full redesign is needed, with an additive approach to avoid removing permissions before new access is in place, especially for developer groups.
    • Audit and Compliance Requirements: Audit and compliance requirements are a factor, though not the immediate driver, but will eventually be important.
    • Collaboration and Training Needs: The workflow continues to involve the networking team, the new resource will need to train networking or infrastructure staff, as they lack the necessary Databricks and Terraform skills.
  • Networking, Endpoints, and Integration Requirements: The secondary priority of establishing secure networking endpoints to enable Databricks integration with Power Apps, a newly acquired SQL Server, and LakeBase for real-time AI readiness, highlighting the team's lack of networking expertise and the overly restrictive cloud firewall setup.
    • Integration Needs: Need to connect Databricks to Power Apps, a mergers and acquisition SQL Server, and to set up LakeBase for real-time data processing, all of which require new networking endpoints.
    • Zero Trust and Firewall Constraints: The current cloud environment as being locked down with on-premise-style firewalls, which is causing connectivity issues between Azure Databricks and other Azure services like Power Apps.
    • Lack of Networking Expertise: Limited networking knowledge among the leaders, and the networking team is unfamiliar with Databricks, making it necessary for the new resource to bridge this gap.
    • Design Leadership Requirement: There is no existing design for the networking and integration work, and the new resource will be expected to lead the design effort and guide the team.
