The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating, and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position DutiesDuration of Assignment:Approximately three (3) to six (6) month internship duration. Internship may be extended based on project needs.
Salary Information:The Public Works Department is currently seeking to fill several part-time unbenefited Undergraduate/Graduate Student Intern in the Engineering Services Division, Survey Section.
Salary ranges for this classification are:
- Undergraduate Student Intern: $15.86- $22.65 per hour (unbenefited)
- Graduate Student Intern: $20.52- $30.30 per hour (unbenefited)
These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.
About the Engineering Services Division, Survey Internship:
- Assist Survey crew with measurements, note-keeping, and field equipment set up.
- Participates in office data review and field investigations of storm and sanitary sewer manhole/invert dimensions.
- Performs map and plan reviews under close supervision.
- Assist with office record map research and field book scanning.
- Assist Survey crews with field checks for city street monuments and punching.
- Perform monument corner record edits with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD).
- Calculate simple math and engineering computations.
- Enter data into spreadsheets and compile reports.
The salary ranges for these classifications:Student Intern Salary Range - $15.86- $22.65/hourly (unbenefited)
Graduate Student Intern Salary Range - $20.52-$30.30/hourly (unbenefited)

Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate Student Intern: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.
Graduate Student Intern: Completion of a bachelor's degree and current enrollment in a master's degree program from an accredited college or university.
Licenses & Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.

Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City's PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.
