Summary

Sr AWS/Postgres Database Engineer
Company Overview
At The Intersect Group, we partner with industry-leading technology organizations A technology-driven organization operating large-scale, highly available SaaS platforms in a regulated environment. Our client develops large-scale, cloud-based software platforms supporting mission-critical operations, transaction processing, and customer-facing services for enterprise and public-sector organizations. Driven by a commitment to operational excellence, innovation, and customer success, they foster a collaborative engineering environment focused on data integrity, operational reliability, and continuous innovation.
Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Engineer to own the design, performance, and operational integrity of the relational data platform powering our client’s core transactional products. In this hands-on individual contributor role, you will lead schema architecture, migration safety, query optimization, and data durability across a high-volume, multi-tenant AWS environment.
You will collaborate closely with software, DevOps, and platform engineering teams to support hundreds of microservices processing shared operational data. Your impact will be defined by maximizing query performance, ensuring zero-downtime schema migrations, maintaining strict recovery objectives, and modernizing legacy data access patterns to enable seamless scale.
Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and manage relational schemas, entity modeling, index strategies, and version-controlled reference data across all environments.
  • Design and execute zero-downtime, backward-compatible database migrations (expand/contract, dual-write) using automated CI/CD pipelines.
  • Profile, tune, and optimize high-volume OLTP workloads on AWS Aurora PostgreSQL and RDS through execution plan analysis, partitioning, and connection management.
  • Diagnose complex latency, deadlock, and transaction boundary issues while setting strict performance budgets and query regression standards.
  • Modernize data access architectures by transitioning legacy data layers toward typed, reusable domain microservices.
  • Implement robust backup, point-in-time recovery, and failover strategies to guarantee contractual RPO and RTO standards through regular restore exercises.
  • Enforce database security, managed identity, least-privilege access, encryption, and data masking for sensitive regulated information.
  • Establish comprehensive database observability using APM tools and define critical Service Level Indicators (SLIs) for the data tier.
Key Requirements
  • 6+ years of production experience in database engineering or platform administration, with 3+ years specifically focused on PostgreSQL at scale.
  • Deep technical expertise in PostgreSQL internals, query plan analysis, autovacuum management, partitioning, and concurrency/locking mechanics.
  • Hands-on production experience managing cloud database platforms (AWS Aurora PostgreSQL or RDS) and infrastructure as code tools (Terraform or CloudFormation).
  • Proven track record using schema migration tools (Flyway, Liquibase, Alembic, or Sqitch) integrated into automated CI/CD pipelines.
  • Proficiency in advanced SQL and at least one scripting or automation language (Python, TypeScript, Go, or Bash).
  • Strong working knowledge of data protection practices, encryption, and compliance frameworks (PCI-DSS, SOC 2, or SOX).
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to mentor peers and articulate complex data-tier trade-offs to cross-functional stakeholders.
How to Apply
If you are ready to take ownership of a high-impact, mission-critical data platform, we want to hear from you! Please submit your updated resume and preferred contact details to apply promptly.
