HDR is looking for a Transmission Line Engineer - Team Lead to join our team in Charlotte or Raleigh. This individual will provide technical leadership, design oversight, and project coordination for transmission line engineering projects serving utility and EPC clients. This role requires a licensed Professional Engineer who can independently seal engineering deliverables, lead a team of engineers and designers, and ensure that all work meets regulatory, code, and client requirements.

Technical Leadership and Design

Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) for transmission line design packages; review, approve, and seal engineering drawings, calculations, and specifications.

Lead the development of transmission line designs, ensuring compliance with client requirements, NESC, ASCE, IEEE, state/regional regulations, and industry best practices.

Oversee schematic design, detailed engineering, and contract document preparation.

Evaluate and resolve complex technical issues and coordinate solutions across disciplines.

Ensure that engineering decisions demonstrate sound judgment aligned with licensure obligations and the protection of public health, safety, and welfare.

Team Leadership, Mentorship & Quality Oversight

Lead, mentor, and develop junior and mid-level engineers, providing guidance on technical practices, engineering judgment, and career development.

Deliver structured training on transmission line design principles, tools, and standards.

Perform formal QA/QC reviews on deliverables prepared by engineers, designers, project coordinators, and BIM technicians.

Promote engineering excellence, consistency, and continuous improvement across the team.

Project Coordination & Execution

Coordinate power and transmission line design team activities throughout all project phases.

Manage and balance workload to achieve deliverable schedules, quality standards, and project budgets.

Participate in project planning, scoping, and scheduling with the Project Manager.

Conduct on-site working sessions and field reviews as needed.

Monitor design progress and proactively identify risks, resource needs, and schedule impacts.

Interdisciplinary and External Collaboration

Review multi-disciplinary project documents to identify conflicts, and coordinate resolutions across civil, structural, electrical, environmental, and permitting teams.

Collaborate with other disciplines to prepare addenda, respond to RFIs, and develop change orders; incorporate approved revisions into project documents.

Documentation, Specifications and Contract Support

Write, edit, and maintain technical specifications for transmission line materials, construction, and performance.

Provide construction contract administration support, including submittal reviews, field change evaluations, and contractor technical inquiries.

Support project closeout activities, ensuring as-built documentation accuracy and lessons learned are captured for future projects.

Quality, Compliance and Client Engagement

Ensure all deliverables meet internal QA/QC standards, licensure responsibilities, and client expectations.

Support client communications on technical matters, design progress, and project decisions.

Uphold the ethical and professional responsibilities of a Licensed Professional Engineer.

Foster a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, or similar transmission line design software.

Knowledge of industry codes and standards (NESC, ASCE, IEEE).

A minimum of 6 years experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector

Previous experience with an engineering consulting firm

  • A minimum of 7 years experience
  • Professional registration, license or certification may be required based on role
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments
  • Good leadership and organizational skills
