Qualifications:

· Strong knowledge of fiber optic testing, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation.
· Experience with OTDR testing, insertion loss testing, power meter testing, and fiber certification.
· Experience performing rack-and-stack installations of datacenter equipment.
· Experience supporting hardware break-fix activities within enterprise datacenters.
· Knowledge of structured cabling systems, networking fundamentals, and datacenter operations.

Overview
The Datacenter Fiber Specialist is responsible for ensuring the integrity, performance, security, and availability of the customer's fiber optic and physical infrastructure within datacenter operations. This role focuses on fiber delivery, troubleshooting, maintenance, testing, rack-and-stack deployments, hardware break-fix support, and infrastructure expansion to support mission-critical environments.
The specialist will provide up to 40 hours per week of technical expertise during regular business hours, working collaboratively with customer engineering teams, third-party fiber providers, OEM vendors, and internal deployment teams. This individual will serve as a subject matter expert for fiber infrastructure and datacenter hardware installations, ensuring all deployments are completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with customer standards.
Experience supporting high-density computing environments and liquid-cooled rack infrastructure is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
1. Fiber Management & Maintenance
- Prevent fiber cuts, degradation, and outages through proactive monitoring and maintenance of fiber infrastructure.
- Perform fiber inspections, cleaning, testing, repairs, and documentation to ensure operational readiness.
- Coordinate fiber delivery, installation, and management activities with customers, suppliers, partners, and field technicians.
- Oversee leased and customer-owned fiber assets to ensure defect-free and on-time service delivery.
- Plan and manage fiber resources required for datacenter expansions and new network deployments.
- Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and service-level agreements (SLAs) associated with fiber operations.
- Provide root cause analysis (RCA), lessons learned, and process improvement recommendations following service-impacting incidents.
- Coach and mentor customer personnel on fiber installation standards, maintenance best practices, and troubleshooting methodologies.
2. Fiber Deployment, Testing & Validation
- Conduct end-to-end fiber testing for new installations and existing infrastructure.
- Perform OTDR testing, optical loss testing, insertion loss measurements, reflectance testing, and return loss analysis.
- Troubleshoot fiber-related impairments and service interruptions.
- Ensure all test equipment remains calibrated and certified according to manufacturer requirements.
- Produce detailed test documentation and reports in both raw and customer-approved formats.
- Support fiber splicing activities associated with deployment and break-fix operations.
- Act as remote hands support for engineering teams and third-party providers.
- Validate successful completion of installations and changes through documented testing procedures.
3. Rack & Stack Installations
- Perform rack-and-stack installation of servers, network switches, routers, storage systems, PDUs, console devices, and supporting infrastructure.
- Install rails, shelves, cable management systems, and associated hardware according to engineering specifications.
- Mount, cable, label, and document all deployed equipment.
- Execute server and networking hardware deployments for greenfield, expansion, and refresh projects.
- Verify rack elevations and equipment placements against approved implementation plans.
- Install structured copper and fiber cabling within datacenter environments.
- Maintain accurate records of installed equipment, assets, port assignments, and cabling infrastructure.
- Support equipment decommissioning, relocation, and migration activities.
4. Hardware Break-Fix & Remote Hands Support
- Perform diagnostic and break-fix activities on datacenter hardware infrastructure.
- Replace failed components including optics, line cards, power supplies, fans, memory modules, drives, network devices, and servers.
- Coordinate troubleshooting efforts with remote engineering teams, OEM vendors, and service providers.
- Respond to service-impacting incidents and restore infrastructure in accordance with established SLAs.
- Escalate complex issues and provide detailed troubleshooting documentation.
- Support commissioning, maintenance windows, and emergency repair activities.
- Perform physical audits of deployed infrastructure and verify operational status.
5. Data Center Hygiene & Compliance
- Inspect fiber pathways, patch panels, racks, cabinets, and ports for cleanliness and proper organization.
- Perform cable management, labeling remediation, and quality assurance activities.
- Trace fibers and jumper circuits to validate connectivity and eliminate potential points of failure.
- Maintain adherence to customer standards, operational procedures, and datacenter best practices.
- Promote a culture of safety, security, and operational excellence.
- Ensure all work complies with applicable industry standards, regulations, and customer requirements.
6. Change Management & Operational Support
- Support infrastructure change management activities through testing, validation, and implementation assistance.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for fiber and physical infrastructure changes.
- Coordinate activities with engineering teams during network upgrades and datacenter expansion projects.
- Participate in incident response and disaster recovery activities.
- Maintain detailed documentation of changes, repairs, installations, and testing activities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence programs.
7. Liquid Cooling Support (Preferred)
- Assist with the deployment and maintenance of liquid-cooled rack environments.
- Support installation and connectivity of Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs).
- Understand liquid cooling architecture, coolant delivery systems, and associated rack infrastructure.
- Perform visual inspections for leaks, hose integrity, and cooling system compliance.
- Support engineering teams during deployments of high-density compute environments.
- Follow all customer and manufacturer safety procedures related to liquid cooling systems.
- Work closely with facilities and engineering personnel to support cooling infrastructure operations.
