Principal Mechanical Engineer (Medical Device / Capital Equipment)
Onsite in Boxborough, MA | 6-12 month contract possible extension/conversion
We are seeking a Principal Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineer to support the lifecycle of a complex, large-scale electromechanical medical device system. This role is focused on sustaining engineering, root cause analysis, and continuous product improvement for a product that is fully commercialized and in active production.
This is a high-impact, hands-on role where you will serve as a key technical resource, working cross-functionally to diagnose issues, implement design changes, and ensure long-term product performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead root cause analysis and technical problem solving for complex mechanical and electromechanical systems in production
- Drive engineering change orders (ECOs), design updates, and product improvements
- Support sustaining engineering efforts for a mature, high-value capital equipment product
- Develop and execute test methods, validation activities, and failure analysis
- Partner with cross-functional teams including R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Service
- Evaluate and improve manufacturability, reliability, and performance of components and assemblies
- Work closely with suppliers on DFM/DFA, component changes, and end-of-life transitions
- Create and maintain technical documentation including BOMs, reports, and FMEAs
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and collaborate across distributed teams
- Support hands-on activities including testing, troubleshooting, and working directly with hardware
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
- ~5 10+ years of experience in manufacturing, sustaining, or product support engineering
- Strong experience with root cause analysis, failure analysis, and problem solving in production environments
- Background supporting complex electromechanical or capital equipment systems
- Experience with engineering change processes (ECOs), FMEA, and design modifications
- Ability to work hands-on with hardware, including testing and troubleshooting
- Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in regulated industries (medical device strongly preferred; regulated environments - aerospace or semiconductor also relevant)
- Familiarity with large-scale mechanical systems, motion systems, or imaging equipment
- Experience with DFM/DFA, supplier collaboration, and product lifecycle management (PLM)
- Proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks) and standard engineering documentation practices
- Knowledge of quality and regulatory frameworks (e.g., FDA, ISO)
