The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at North Carolina State University delivers secure, reliable, and innovative technology services that support the university's academic, research, and administrative missions. OIT provides enterprise infrastructure including campus networking, data centers, cybersecurity, research computing, classroom technologies, telecommunications, and broad IT support to faculty, staff, and students across the university.
The Lead Data Center Installer is a highly skilled hands-on technician who provides day-to-day leadership and oversight of data center installation activities. This role reduces the operational burden on the Critical Facilities Manager by taking ownership of daily field operations, coordinating installation tasks, training technicians, and ensuring that physical infrastructure projects move forward efficiently.
The Lead Data Center Installer is not a server or systems role. This position focuses on the physical installation of data center infrastructure, including racks, cabinets, cable management, power distribution, and copper/fiber cabling. The lead will work directly alongside technicians, providing on-site technical expertise while also offering light project coordination and work oversight to maintain quality, standards compliance, and schedule adherence.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Installation & Data Center Work
Perform and oversee installation, relocation, and decommissioning of data center equipment including racks, cabinets, servers, network equipment, and associated hardware
Install, route, and terminate copper and fiber cabling following university and industry standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI)
Execute data center buildouts including rack placement, grounding, overhead/underfloor cable management systems, and power distribution components
Ensure all physical installations follow safety, labeling, documentation, and quality standards
Operational Leadership
Serve as the primary day-to-day operational contact for data center installation activities
Coordinate and prioritize technician work, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and correctly
Act as the field escalation point for installation issues, material needs, and on-site technical questions
Train and mentor technicians on installation practices, standards, tools, and procedures
Conduct quality checks on completed work to ensure compliance with documentation and standards
Project & Workflow Coordination
Assist the Critical Facilities Manager with planning, scheduling, and sequencing installation tasks
Coordinate work with network, systems, facilities, ComTech teams, and vendors
Track installation progress, work dependencies, and required materials
Maintain accurate documentation, labeling, and records of infrastructure changes and buildouts

Additional Skills & Qualifications
5+ years of hands-on experience installing data center infrastructure, including server hardware, racks, power systems, and structured cabling
Strong technical proficiency in physical layer work: copper/fiber installation, termination, routing, and testing
Demonstrated experience providing leadership, task oversight, or project coordination in technical installation environments
Ability to interpret and execute installation plans, diagrams, and technical documentation
Ability to lift, move, and install heavy equipment within data center environments
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading small installation teams, mentoring technicians, or overseeing field operations
Experience working in enterprise or higher-education data centers
Familiarity with data center standards, cable management systems, and physical infrastructure best practices
Strong organizational skills with the ability to track daily operational work and project tasks

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
