Epic Certified Lab (Beaker) Architect – Job Description

Work Authorization: Open to candidates with any visa status (must be authorized to work in the U.S.)

 

An Epic Certified Lab Architect is responsible for defining the overall architecture, strategy, and governance of laboratory solutions within the Epic Systems ecosystem, with deep expertise in the Beaker (LIS) module.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and own the end-to-end architecture for Epic Beaker (CP/AP) and related lab systems
  • Lead solution design for complex laboratory workflows: specimen lifecycle, accessioning, testing, resulting, and reporting
  • Architect integrations between Epic Beaker, lab instruments, middleware, external labs, and enterprise systems (HL7/FHIR)
  • Establish data architecture, interoperability standards, and integration patterns across the healthcare ecosystem
  • Provide technical leadership across multiple projects, implementations, and upgrades
  • Collaborate with enterprise architects, lab leadership, pathologists, and IT stakeholders to align solutions with business goals
  • Define best practices, design standards, and governance for Epic lab implementations
  • Oversee performance optimization, scalability, and system reliability
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare and lab regulations (CLIA, CAP, HIPAA)
  • Lead risk assessment, solution reviews, and architectural decision-making
  • Mentor senior analysts and technical teams; act as SME for lab domain and Epic Beaker

Required Skills

  • Epic Certification in Beaker (CP and/or AP) (mandatory)
  • Strong expertise in Lab Information Systems (LIS) and end-to-end lab workflows
  • Deep knowledge of HL7, FHIR, and healthcare integrations
  • Experience with interface engines (e.g., Cloverleaf, Rhapsody, Mirth)
  • Strong understanding of healthcare data models, interoperability, and enterprise architecture
  • Exposure to Epic data platforms (Clarity, Caboodle) and reporting frameworks
  • Excellent leadership, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in IT, Healthcare Informatics, Life Sciences, or related field
  • 12+ years of experience in healthcare IT with significant Epic Beaker experience
  • Proven experience as a Solution/Enterprise Architect in large-scale Epic implementations
  • Experience leading multiple full-cycle Epic implementations and upgrades

Nice to Have

  • Multi-module Epic certifications
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure/AWS) in healthcare environments
  • Knowledge of data governance, security, and compliance frameworks
