At the NYC Department of Buildings, we are responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. The Technical Affairs & Code Development division is responsible for managing the periodic update of the NYC Construction Codes and Electrical Code, development of new Codes and related requirements, interpretation of Code, and the development and implementation of Code-related policies and procedures. The Office of Technical Certification and Research (OTCR) oversees technical certifications of approved agencies and entities performing inspections, tests, and material approvals, and evaluates new technology that enhances safety, sustainability, and efficiency.

The year-round intern (College Aide) will assist with technical and administrative work for the approval of third-party inspection agencies and alternative materials.

Under the direction and supervision of Director of the Office of Technical Certification and Research (OTCR), the Technical Affairs Intern will:
-Learn technical Code requirements
-Assist with research of code and related technical matters, including alternative energy technology
-Perform technical writing
-Maintain databases, spreadsheets and tracking systems
-Develop tables, charts, graphs, and presentations related to the unit's programs.
-Communicate with design professionals such as engineers and architects who perform third-party inspections through assisting with them with registration and responding to technical questions
-Perform analysis of the third-party inspection program
-Schedule and attend intra-agency, division, and industry meetings

REMOTE WORK
When working a 35 hour/week schedule, this position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.

WORK HOURS
Up to 17 hours/week when school is in session
Up to 35 hours/week during school break

Qualifications

For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
