Job Description
Meta is seeking a Prototyping Engineer to join its Advanced Development Team. The ideal candidate will operate as a self-starter who identifies gaps in systems and processes and builds solutions from the ground up. The role requires broad hands-on capability across mechanical, electrical, and software domains to integrate subsystems into functional prototypes for next-generation AR/VR devices. The position involves building, debugging, iterating on prototype hardware, and developing AI workflows that improve efficiency and impact.
Responsibilities:
- Identify technical gaps and design, build, and integrate multi-disciplinary prototype systems across mechanical, electrical, and software domains.
- Integrate and validate optical, electrical, mechanical, and firmware subsystems into cohesive prototype assemblies.
- Debug hardware and firmware using multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and power supplies to isolate root causes.
- Troubleshoot embedded systems and device firmware using adb, serial consoles, and log analysis.
- Develop GUIs and streamline bring-up processes using AI practices and tools.
- Design and maintain test fixtures, jigs, and custom tooling for builds, alignment, and validation.
- Collaborate with optical, mechanical, electrical, and software teams to translate research concepts into working prototypes.
- Document assembly processes, integration procedures, and debug workflows for repeatable builds.
- Proactively identify risks during bring-up and drive issues to resolution with minimal oversight.
- Support AR display hardware integration and process development, including optical alignment, metrology, and testing.
- Leverage AI for data analysis, visualization, and process development; develop AI model skills and recipes.
- Design, develop, and maintain multi-agent AI infrastructure and automated data pipelines.
- Integrate AI agents with enterprise platforms via APIs and serverless platforms.
- Collaborate with product, design, operations, and infrastructure to build AI-native application experiences.
- Build and integrate LLM and generative AI capabilities, including prompt engineering and context management.
- Troubleshoot display hardware and firmware/software issues.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in hardware prototyping, systems integration, or lab engineering, or a relevant advanced degree with 3+ years equivalent experience.
- Self-starter with the ability to identify problems, propose solutions, and drive projects with minimal direction.
- Working knowledge across mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines and subsystem interactions.
- Proficiency with multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers for signal and power analysis.
- Experience debugging embedded systems with adb, UART/serial consoles, JTAG, or similar interfaces.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience collaborating with hardware, firmware, and software teams on integrated prototypes.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in AR/VR or display prototyping, optical alignment, and metrology.
- Familiarity with PCB design review, schematic reading, and soldering/rework.
- Scripting or automation with Python or shell for tests, data collection, or process automation, including test/debug automation.
- Experience with current AI tooling and practices.
- Hands-on mechanical assembly, including torque-sensitive and precision alignment operations.
- Familiarity with firmware development, embedded Linux, or RTOS-based systems.
- Experience building and maintaining lab infrastructure, test systems, or custom instrumentation.
