RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client that is seeking a Senior Technician (Relay) in Tempe, AZ.
Overview:
We are seeking skilled and motivated Relay Technicians to support Relay Commissioning & Testing and Protection, Automation, and Control (PAC) Construction activities. In this role, you will help ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the power system by performing critical work on protective relays, control schemes, and substation equipment.
Responsibilities may include field commissioning of new protection systems; construction, wiring, and equipment installation; troubleshooting; and operational testing in energized substation environments. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy hands-on technical work, problem-solving, and collaboration as part of a high-performing team.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Relay Commissioning & Testing duties may include:
* Programming and setting microprocessor relays and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs)
* Commissioning and energizing protective relaying, telemetry, and IED systems through verification of wiring, settings, logic, and communications
* Using test equipment to simulate faults and validate protective relay performance
* Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on relay and IED systems
* Preparing and submitting commissioning and maintenance documentation
* Supporting PAC Construction activities as assigned
* Working overtime and responding to callouts as required
Protection, Automation & Control Construction duties may include:
* Providing on-site project coordination and oversight of field personnel
* Coordinating outages for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial facilities
* Reviewing protection and control design drawings for quality assurance
* Planning installation strategies including panel construction, procurement, wiring, and scheduling
* Performing installation QA/QC through wiring and scheme checks
REQUIREMENTS:
* Completion of an approved apprenticeship program or equivalent training
* Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Relay Technician (Technician II level)
* Senior Technician consideration with 6+ years of related experience
* Technician II typically requires 4+ years of experience and completion of a four-year apprenticeship or equivalent training
Knowledge & Skills:
* Strong understanding of electrical and electronic theory
* Working knowledge of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and basic statistics
* Experience with protective relay theory, principles, and applications
* Familiarity with relay test equipment and commissioning processes
* Understanding of protection system testing, construction practices, and quality control
* Proficiency with personal computers and related technical applications
Additional Qualifications:
* Ability and willingness to work overtime and respond to callouts
* Ability to prepare accurate technical documentation
* Willingness to attend training programs, seminars, and technical meetings
* Ability to assist engineers and support field leadership
* Capability to mentor and assist other technicians, apprentices, and trade helpers
* Commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork in high-risk environments
The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.
We offer comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability & ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
