Senior Backend / Networking Engineer

Overview

We are building a mission-critical communications platform designed for environments where traditional connectivity fails. Our systems power real-time situational awareness across distributed teams operating in safety- and security-critical scenarios. This role sits at the intersection of backend services, distributed systems, and networking, with direct impact on real-world operations where performance, reliability, and security are essential.

We are seeking a Senior Backend / Networking Engineer to design, build, and scale backend and networking systems that support real-time communication, edge connectivity, and cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and scale backend and networking services for real-time, distributed systems

• Develop services and networking components using Kotlin (JVM), Rust, and modern backend frameworks

• Architect and implement networking control planes, relay infrastructure, and communication protocols

• Build and optimize systems for low-latency, bandwidth-constrained, and high-availability environments

• Design and implement security-first backend and networking solutions

• Support real-time data exchange between cloud services, edge devices, and networked hardware

• Lead integrations with external partner platforms (commercial and government)

• Improve system performance, reliability, scalability, and observability

• Manage and evolve cloud infrastructure in AWS and/or Google Cloud Platform

• Collaborate with frontend, mobile, firmware, and hardware teams to deliver end-to-end solutions

• Own features and systems from concept through production deployment and field use

• Establish and maintain backend and networking engineering standards and best practices

Required Qualifications

• 5–8+ years of experience in backend engineering, networking, or distributed systems

• Strong experience building production backend services (JVM-based systems preferred)

• Proficiency in Rust and/or Kotlin

• Deep understanding of networking fundamentals: IP, routing, NAT traversal, VPNs

• Experience with distributed systems, real-time communication, and high-availability architectures

• Hands-on experience operating systems in AWS or Google Cloud Platform

• Strong systems thinking with focus on scalability, reliability, and security

• Comfortable working across infrastructure, APIs, and networking layers

• Proven ownership mindset with ability to take ideas from design to production

Preferred / Nice to Have

• Experience with gRPC, PostgreSQL, Redis, or real-time data pipelines

• Background in software-defined networking, edge networking, or mesh networks

• Experience supporting field-deployed or mission-critical systems

• Familiarity with security-sensitive or regulated environments

• Experience working directly with customers on deployment and operational support
