The Instrumentation Division in the Technology Innovation Directorate (TID-ID) has an intern employment opportunity available for a Student who is interested in mechanical engineering, or related discipline and seeking to gain work experience.

Example projects and responsibilities include (but are not limited) to the following:
  • Hands on assembly of mechanical devices packaged with electronics (ASIC s, PCB)
  • Keep an inventory of the parts and the assemblies labeled by identification numbers.
  • Participate in the Mechanical and Thermal QC, following the testing procedures.
  • Document the QC results in short technical reports (Spreadsheets, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Handle and modify the 3D CAD models of the assemblies and generate the design of components with the supervision of the project leads.
  • Simple thermal, structural, and hydraulic analysis with FEM, Matlab or Python is a plus.
Other duties may also be assigned.

Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt, internship position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more), not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age and currently enrolled in an educational program or entry level and have US work authorization. All accepted candidates must have or be able to timely acquire US work authorization. The period of this internship is limited from June to August 2026.

To be successful in this position:
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program or entry level.
  • Interest in mechanical engineering or related field
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling, SolidWorks or SolidEdge
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Demonstrated skills with Microsoft Office Suite such as Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
