Job Title - Network Design Engineer
Location - Remote ( EST / CST )
Contract Duration - 6+ Months
Responsible for designing CALEA lawful intercept capabilities for virtualized, cloud-based network functions. Creates compliant, scalable, and resilient designs that integrate VNFs/CNFs with cloud infrastructure (compute, storage, networking) and required interfaces, while meeting performance, availability, security, and auditability expectations. Works across architecture, labs, product, security/compliance, operations, PMO, and multi-vendor partners to deliver build-ready designs.
Key Roles and Responsibilities (VNF/Cloud Design)
- Own CALEA design across VNF/CNF onboarding and lifecycle: requirements HLD/LLD capacity models deployment patterns test/acceptance criteria.
- Design CALEA solutions for cloud-hosted intercept functions including:
- tenant/segment design (VRFs/VXLANs, security zones, micro-segmentation)
- service chaining and traffic steering (ingress/egress, SPAN/mirroring equivalents where applicable)
- redundancy patterns (N+1, active/active vs active/standby), failure domains, and HA/DR behaviors
- Define cloud network architecture requirements needed for intercept readiness (east/west and north/south flows, routing, firewall policy, certificate/key dependencies, time sync, logging, and observability).
- Produce engineering artifacts: architecture diagrams, interface/flow documentation, IP plans, VNF resource sizing (vCPU/RAM/storage), throughput assumptions, scaling thresholds, and rollback strategies.
- Create and maintain standard design patterns and runbooks for repeatable deployments (golden templates, configuration baselines, evidence/audit artifacts).
- Lead multi-vendor integration design and technical governance: interoperability constraints, version compatibility, dependency mapping (cloud platform, orchestrator, VNF manager, collectors/mediation, logging/monitoring).
- Develop test strategies for virtualized intercept: functional validation, resiliency/failover, performance, data integrity, and upgrade/patch validation.
- Identify design-time risks unique to cloud/VNFs (noisy neighbor, overlay/underlay mismatches, MTU, clock drift, orchestration drift, image provenance) and drive mitigations into the design.
- Support implementation teams with design clarifications and initial deployment guidance; drive corrective design changes when field results reveal gaps.
Principal Competencies (VNF/Cloud)
- Strong TCP/IP, routing, subnetting, firewall policy design; packet-flow reasoning across overlays
- Cloud/virtualization concepts: OpenStack/Contrail/VMware, virtual networking, security groups, distributed routing, service insertion
- VNF/CNF lifecycle understanding: onboarding, instantiation, scaling, healing, upgrades, and dependency management
- Linux proficiency; automation mindset (Python preferred) for validation and repeatability
- Database familiarity (Oracle a plus) and data handling principles
- Strong documentation and design governance skills (HLD/LLD, decision records, standards)
- Ability to lead cross-team design reviews and drive consensus in multi-vendor environments
