In this role, you'll serve as the technical expert for packaging compliance and optimization, focusing on UN regulatory requirements, cost-saving initiatives, and qualifications.

You'll ensure that every shipped package meets rigorous safety and quality standards while continuously identifying opportunities to improve performance, reduce costs, and enhance customer satisfaction. This position is ideal for a hands-on engineer who thrives on technical problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and making a tangible impact through their work.

How you will make an impact:

  • Conduct packaging testing and validation to confirm performance under hazardous materials (Hazmat) and transport conditions.
  • Collaborate with procurement and suppliers to qualify new vendors, evaluate packaging components, and support onboarding processes.
  • Lead cost reduction and efficiency projects, identifying opportunities for material optimization, process improvements, and standardization.
  • Support manufacturing operations by troubleshooting packaging issues and implementing robust, long-term solutions.
  • Analyze packaging performance data to identify trends, drive improvements, and prevent recurring issues.
  • Partner with quality and regulatory teams to ensure documentation and specifications meet all global and local compliance requirements.
  • Engage cross-functionally with operations, safety, logistics, and supply chain to align packaging performance with divisional goals.
  • Stay informed about industry standards, emerging technologies, and sustainability trends to develop innovative packaging solutions.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement aligned with Thermo Fisher Scientific's mission and values: Integrity, Intensity, Innovation, and Involvement.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in packaging/labeling engineering, or related field.
  • 4+ years of packaging engineering experience, preferably within chemical, pharmaceutical, or hazardous materials industries.
  • Proven expertise in UN Packaging and Hazmat compliance (CFR 49, DOT, IATA, IMDG).
  • Experience in vendor qualification, technical evaluations, and onboarding processes.
  • Track record of implementing cost savings or efficiency projects in packaging design or material sourcing.
  • Exposure to packaging test methods, performance validation, and root cause analysis.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally and influence without authority.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain SOPs and technical documentation.
  • Strong project management skills.

Work Environment:
  • Primarily site-based role with occasional travel to vendors, conferences, or other manufacturing sites.
  • A fast-paced, collaborative environment requires flexibility and adaptability.
  • Exposure to loud noises (equipment/machinery) and office environments.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, gloves, and lab coats, as required.
  • Potential exposure to various outdoor weather conditions when supporting site operations.
