Summary

Overview

LMI is seeking an experienced Embedded Systems Engineer with a minimum of an active SECRET clearance and at least 3 years of demonstrated experience to support the United States Army. This role focuses on the design, development, and integration of low-level software and firmware for tactical hardware and sensor systems. You will work directly with US Army mission partners to bridge the gap between physical hardware and cloud-based digital solutions for the Warfighter.

The ideal candidate is adept at programming for resource-constrained environments, with a strong understanding of Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), hardware abstraction layers, and secure firmware development. You should be comfortable working at the intersection of hardware and software, collaborating closely with platform engineers to integrate edge devices into broader DevSecOps pipelines and cloud-native architectures.

LMI is a new breed of digital solutions provider dedicated to accelerating government impact with innovation and speed. Investing in technology and prototypes ahead of need, LMI brings commercial-grade platforms and mission-ready AI to federal agencies at commercial speed.

Leveraging our mission-ready technology and solutions, proven expertise in federal deployment, and strategic relationships, we enhance outcomes for the government, efficiently and effectively. With a focus on agility and collaboration, LMI serves the defense, space, healthcare, and energy sectors-helping agencies navigate complexity and outpace change. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, LMI is committed to delivering impactful results that strengthen missions and drive lasting value.

Responsibilities

  • Firmware Development: Design, develop, and maintain low-level software and firmware for embedded processors (ARM, AVR, RISC-V).
  • Hardware Integration: Ensure new embedded systems function smoothly across tactical programs, integrating sensors, radios, and peripherals with mobile and cloud systems.
  • Edge Optimization: Optimize code for power consumption, memory usage, and processing efficiency on smartphones, tablets, and custom EUDs.
  • Automated Testing: Automate hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and firmware deployment processes within a CI/CD framework.
  • System Reliability: Maintain the underlying embedded architecture to ensure reliability and security in disconnected or contested environments.
  • Driver Development: Write and update device drivers for communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, and USB.
  • Security Implementation: Apply secure coding practices to firmware to protect against hardware-level vulnerabilities and ensure data-at-rest encryption.
  • Debugging: Use logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG/SWD debuggers to troubleshoot complex hardware-software interactions.

Qualifications

  • Clearance: Minimum of an active SECRET clearance.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-years of experience in embedded software design, development, and hardware-software integration.
  • Government Experience: Previous government technology experience, specifically with tactical hardware or PEO-led programs.
  • Programming: Expertise in C and C++ for embedded systems; familiarity with Python for scripting and automation.
  • RTOS & Kernel: Experience with FreeRTOS, VxWorks, or Embedded Linux (Yocto/Buildroot).
  • Hardware Proficiency: Strong familiarity with microcontrollers, SoCs, and FPGA soft-cores.
  • Automation: Experience using GitLab for CI/CD and automated firmware build environments.
  • Linux Toolsets: Strong familiarity with Linux for cross-compilation and network-related troubleshooting.
  • Security: DoD 8570 IAT Level II Certification (Security+ or equivalent).
  • Agile: Experience working with Agile teams to deliver iterative hardware/software increments.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of Army PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) or electronic warfare systems.
  • Experience with Docker for containerized embedded build environments.
  • Familiarity with Bus protocols (CAN, MIL-STD-1553) and tactical data links.
  • Experience with Android NDK (Native Development Kit) for high-performance mobile integration.
